How has Ev affected your view on music

I was driving home today and decided to turn on the raido and check out what's on. I noticed that Evanescence has seriously changed the way I perceive music. Their songs have such deep meaning and structure that it makes everything else sound really hollow, especially rap songs. It seems to me that songs are being written just for the sake of singing whereas Evanescence songs have meaning, reason, and purpose. I feel like i've been brought up to a whole new level in appreciating music. After one particular rap song where the "artist" sings about wanting to bone a stripper on the pole, I just decided to shut it off and drive home in silence. Points for anyone who knows which song i'm talking about.

I'm not saying that having a great voice and an awesome band won't help, but overall I feel like i no longer just listen to music for entertainment, but enjoy understanding the music, which may sound weird, but that's how Ev has affected me.

It is almost same for me, now i listen more to the lyrics and try to understand the meaning with the song and not only listen the music like i did before...

widowmaker,

I totally concur with you on your opinions concerning perception of todays so-called 'music' after having listened to Ev for what is nearly four years now. Most of what they play on today's top-40 radio is total crap, in my opinion.

curious...have you gotten into other bands with like a more radical style than Ev such as Nightwish and Tristania? these bands I have yet to hear on the radio. lol

Ev (and then Nightwish) have definitely gotten me much more into Classical- influenced Metal!

p.s. I've had a couple beers now. Seems my posts are getting kinda weird.

I rarely listen to evanescence or any other rock or goth. I mostly listen to modern christian music. bands like kutless, casting crowns, and todd agnew. though on occassions i do listen to evanescence and other rock bands. but, i feel so confused by most rock or rap bands when i listen to them. I am an ex drug addict and feel hopelessness sometimes when i listen to music that does not encourage me to live this life, ecspecially in the times that we live in the mess the world is in. So, i guess i am a lifer. I got to agree though, evanescence makes alot of other music seem silly

I totally agree. I appreciate music more since getting into Ev 3 and a half years ago. The fact that so much goes into their music makes you realize how little goes into other music currently on the radio and it doesnt even make it worth listening to.

I completely agree with widowmaker; all of Evanescence's songs were written for a reason, and by reason I do not mean to sell albums or get famous. Every track on The Open Door has a meaning behind it, and if you watch some recent interviews with the band you can find out what some of them are. People can really relate to Evanescence songs, and I can say that Taking Over Me has really changed my life. I can totally relate to the song, and it has got me through some very difficult times. I can say the same about My Last Breath and Even in Death. I doubt if any rap songs have ever had the same influence on a person's life. Many people would think this is taking things a bit too far but I don't listen to any bands other than Evanescence any more. With so many deep and meaningful songs I don't feel I need to listen to other music.

Ev has made me appreciate the music business as a whole. My music tastes have also actually expanded as a result of listening to Ev. Because I find that Ev's music is a perfect blend of a lot of music that I listen to, I feel they've helped increase my listening to more genres.

Aside from that, even though they don't consider themselves a band without religious affiliation, for what I'd been going through before I listened to them, I credit them for giving me a much more positive and inspirational mindset.

The only way Evanescence have affected me is given me another band to enjoy listening to. Personally I don't think Evanescence are revolutionary or bring anything new to the scene. Sorry.

No Switchfoot?

I agree with the sentiments re: Evanescence.
They've become the yardstick by which all other bands are measured, for me. There's a lot of music on my hard drive that I just don't listen to anymore, because it's... well, not as worthwhile as it used to be. I just don't ever feel in the mood to listen to it.

I already loved good music before I listened to Evanescence, so they didn't really change anything for me. *shrug* They're not all that consequential in my life; I just like the music they make.
