Wow, what a song. Everyone who likes this song raise your hand!
Who else get's that 'empty' feeling inside when you listen to this song? It's kinda hard to discribe but it's a feel that screams out "There is definately something missing in my life" (or something along the lines of that =P).
Does anyone know what I'm going on about?!
I read a sad book once and in the end everyone either dies or commits suicide and whenever I hear Field of Innocence my thoughts go racing back to this book.

I love the song and the lyrics...i can follow her thaughts and i know what she supposes...especially that:
"I still remember the sun
Always warm up my back
Somehow,it seems colder now..."
I thought this song rocked the first time i heard it!!! I LOVE It!!!
I think it's trying to say that knowing too much about something hurts sometimes. Wishing that she could go back. Or something along that line.

I love that song, and I kinda know what amy must have felt
I long to be a child again, no worries..
and yes, I feel empty when I listen to that song, like everything bright is gone
I'll never feel like a child again

I love this song, I can't help crying everytime I hear it, I feel "connected" with the song, cause I wish I could forget the truth, I wish I could believe all the lies again and I wish I could have my innocence again...

I, too, connect with the song. It descibes exactly how I feel now. In a way, I wish I were still a child, and didn't know the ways of the cruel world. No worries and nothing to care about. If I'm in the mood (and this goes for any Ev song), then I do end up feeling empty. But it's not the song's fault because I already felt that way before I put it on.
I can honestly say that I can connect to every Ev song, even the ones on the new album. Some relate to personal situations I've been in. For example, "CMWYS" reminded me of my aunts, whom I have barely any contact with - but one aunt in particular seems to always call me when she's ... well, not sober. The song inspired me to write a poem (which can be seen if you click the link in my siggy) about it and let those feelings out - to let it go. Now that's one less thing cluttering up my mind.
Also, Amy seems to be able to capture some type of emotion I'm feeling in her songs. Like in "Sweet Sacrifice," "Lithium," and "All That I'm Living For." It doesn't necessarily have to be a whole song, but just parts of it, like a sentence or stanza. And it brings me comfort in knowing that someone else has been through the same things as me too. I've realized that I'm not "The Only One."

wow! A field of Innocence thread!
This is one of my favorites evanescence songs ever, I really like it. For me, represents the old evanescence when I listening the first time, I was very sorprised for the lyrics and also the music behind amy's voice and don't forget when Ben talking. Simply Amazing!

I love this song.
It was one of my favourites before TOD came out, and it can still be considered as such. It's so beautiful and I wish it made the album cut for "Fallen". Even if it wasn't being considered, it's still a great song.
Very nice work Ev :)

i love this song, it's one of my fav slower songs, next to hello. anyway, i find that i can relate to it, especially these two parts: "
I still remember the world
From the eyes of a child
Slowly those feelings
Were clouded by what I know now" and "Oh I, I want to go back to
Believing in everything and knowing nothing at all"
i listen to that song when i guess, there are some things i can't handle, maybe becuse it's too hard or it's shocking. and i wish i could go back to when i was younger and didn't have to deal with certain things.
and Forsaking mercy, i was wondering, what was the name of that book you read?

This song is like a reality check. It's one of my fav. When we were younger there were no lies, truth nor backstabbers in our life. Everything was all a meadow and the sun shiniing above us. But as we got older, all of that changed. That's how I feel when I hear that song. Love it!

ben first wrote it as a poem, and amy then wrote a song about it, in fact you can hear ben at the backround reciting the poem... yeah, i did get that empty feeling a couple of times... specially at the part "i want to go back to believing in everything and knowing nothing at all" sometimes is better to stay in ignorance... heheh but i love it... i sent the lyrics to a friend once, ever since she's been loving that song, she said that she had never seen something so beautiful...
fields of innocence, even the tittle gives me chills....

I've forgotten heh >_<
It was a long time ago. Normally I don't bother to remember books by name, I just read them and remember the story line.
I especially like the lines "Where has my heart gone? An uneven trade for the real world" and also "Where has my heart gone? Trapped through the eyes of a stranger" yeah i like that tune. Very meaningful lyrics too.

It's definitely an easy song to relate to. It's like when we were younger, the world seemed like such a wonderful place...and then the older we get, the more innocence and naivete we lose, and the more complicated our lives become. Sometimes when it all gets to be too much to deal with, it's easy to want to go back to the simpler days when it took very little to make us truly happy. I think everyone feels that to an extent at times.
Then again, like someone else said, I can connect to pretty much every Ev song in one way or another. One of the many reasons I love them as much as I do.

I listen to this song whenever I feel overwhelmed. When you're a child, everything is so easy and carefree. Then you're older and in the real world, where everything is different and harder. When you're a child, there is nothing really that you have to worry about.
I still remember the world
From the eyes of a child
Slowly those feelings
Were clouded by what I know now
and
Oh I... I want to go back to
Believing in everything and knowing nothing at all

Whenever I listen to this song, I feel that empty feeling, too. If I had to describe it, I`d say it was sorta like telling yourself 'Don`t get happy, it`s all a lie". I love the message. I think all of us just want to go back. regain the Innocence. Bytthe way, is this song called "Fields of Innocence", or "Field of Innocence"? I`m not sure.

I get exactly what you mean. Only when I hear the song I feel like it's written in a childs and an adults piont of view.
When I listen to it, it makes me feel like I want to be a kid again. It makes me feel like I did when I was a child and hardly knew anything at all.
I think this song is written in such a way that it just over powers you, in the good way. But hey, every Evanescence song over powers us, but in different ways. I think this is the only song that over powers us in the significant way it does.
I believe this song was written because Amy wasnted to be a kid again and misses those good old days where you knew nothing and were so innocent and like nothing could happen to you, but now, being an adult, well 16 or 17 when she wrote it, knew alot of stuff and it ruined the joy in your/her/our lives.
"I still remember the world from the eyes of a child. -Seeing how everything went the way you planned it to and nothing backfired. Feeling all those innocent things.-
Slowly those feelings were clouded by what I know now -The feelings of the innocence of being a child and the not knowing a lot were clouded by what she now knows.-
Where has my heart gone
Trapped in the eyes of a straner/An uneven trade for the real world.
Oh I, I want to go back to
Believeing in everything and knowing nothing at all. -Wondering where her, I can't think of the word.. youth?, went. She is trapped in this whirlwind of knowing. She wants to go back to the good old days of not knowing and believing in whatever she wanted to or was told.-
I still remeber the sun
Always warm on my back
Somehow it seems colder now -She remembers how everything used to have that warm feeling, and it was always there, but now that she is older, it seems to have faded a bit.-

From the view of a music producer, I could say that it's the best song of Origin as far as the sound and equalization are concerned.

Like everyone else has said, this song makes me wish I could revisit my childhood. Adults, particularly my parents, would always tell me to enjoy being a kid and don't try to grow up too fast. I never understood what they meant by that until I became an early teenager (22 now).
There's not a single teen/adult alive that cannot relate this song. That, and the arrangement of the song just makes it an unforgettable track, resonating with everyone.
In addition to (occassionally) revisiting my child (like winding back the clock for a little while), this song makes me want to protect the innocence of my future children so they can enjoy it as long as possible. However that would probably involve sheltering them too much and censoring everything around them which won't make them as well-rounded as they'd need to be in a world like ours. It's really too bad.
****ing awesome song!

I used to think this was a slightly weak track on Origin but I've been listening to it a lot recently and I have a new found appreciation of it.
The guitar at the beginning, the poem being read and the vocals at the end are especially fantastic IMO. What a song!

I don't get this particular feeling from the song, but I do know what your talking about with the empty feeling. I get that from a lot of things that remind me of really important memories and a few songs (including My Immortal).
As for this song, it's beautiful. It describes how the world changes when you get older and don't see it from the eyes of an innocent child.

I freaking love this song. Sometimes I wish I could just go back to my childhood, because in a way being a child was like a comfort zone, you didn't have to worry about the world around you, you were safe. My huge awakening as a child was when I was 4, my grandpa died of cancer, he was like my best friend he always played puppets with me, and he was just a special person in my life. I didn't understand the whole concept of death, so every single time I'd go back to my grandma's to find that my grandpa wasn't there I'd take the puppet we used to play with and hide away in one of their closets and continue to play with the puppet. But I knew something wasn't right. Still I continued to live as a normal child would. This song reminds me basically of my childhood, it makes me sad sometimes because I wish my grandpa was still alive to see how much I've changed.
Wow sorry for my rambling.....
I tend to do that a lot.

It's obvious from the responses to this thread that we all long for our childhood. The sorrow and despair of this song are reflected in the people replying to this thread. We all long for a world where peace and innocence are eternal- not the "rampant chaos" in which we live. But until the world becomes perfect and innocence (or gullability?) becomes permanent, we only have each other.

I can really relate to this song. I use to not be able to before, when I first heard it when I was like 13 or something a still young.
And then I grew up. I got more knowledge once I entered high school. And all the innocence of being a child and ingorance is bliss attitude goes away and then there's this "I'm so grown up now." or "Where did the time go." Or some other weird thought comes to your head about being young and then being grown...
And as Fox the Sly said (I agree with everything you said) wanting to revisit your childhood, and not listening to your parents when they said "Don't grow up too fast. Enjoy your childhood while it lasts, because before you know it, you'll be all grown up and out there in that terrible world." And not listening to them because he has that "I know everything" attitude. And boy, were they right. Also how there isn't a single teen or adult that can't relate to this song because everyone wants to be a child again and revisit all the happy times in their childhood life and everything. And wanting to protect our future children from the cruel world and wanting them to have their innocence, but at the same time feeling like you're going to be overprotecting them too much and then they won't enjoy it...
I'm only 16 (almost 17) and once I turned 16, I felt like 3 or 4 years were taken off of my life. Now I feel like I'm 32 (not really but I feel like I've grown up a lot, like an exceptional amount, maybe because of JROTC, since my 15th and 16th birthday) and boy is it a horrible feeling. I'm about to leave high school (1 year left) and it's such a scary and sad feeling. I just wish I was able to stay. Plus I also don't want to leave because I like this one guy that's in the grade below me... *sigh* but yeah...
But I think in a way, high school ruins your innocence (if it wasn't already lost/ruined in middle school/Junior high), but in a way, High School is the best part of your life... Wow I feel like I'm going to cry...
Okay, I'm done.

I love this song! It's one of the best earlier songs imo, it's been one of my faves for a long time. It is pretty sad, yes, but I can only see the beauty in it, and it calms me. To me it's somewhere safe to hide. x)
%100 agreement, thanks for clarifying my thoughts:D

probably my favorite song on origin. as it does to everyone else, it kinda makes me feel sad and empty, like the world is a cruel place and i just want to forget everything.
plus she sings it beautifully, and i REALLY wish she would perform it live one day. it's one of the saddest songs, along with missing and understanding.
I agree with u! I'd like to hear it live too.It would be fantastic!

Fantasic song. How can you not love it ? And I think everyone can relate to this song, I mean in some point in evertones life they want to go back to when they were kids.
I don't really want to go back to my childhood. I was very very innocent. I was picked on and nobody liked me but I didn't get that.
I have a question though.. what are the choir singing in the begining. ?

I've always loved Ev songs that use latin in them, and of those songs, Field of Innocence is my most favorite. I especially like Ben's speaking part.

FOI is one of Ev's songs that I can relate to a LOT.It brings me that feeling of hollowness and regret for something lost.Especially:
I still remember the sun always warm on my back
Somehow it seems colder now
I'm nearly gonna cry when I listen to it

Raises hand.
Whenever I hear this, my mind suddenly goes blank and then I start to think back about being a child again...knowing nothing at all.
It's very sad and beautiful...

Okay. I love this song. But I must ask.
If It FIELD or FIELDS?! Cause I see it as both, and I've always called it "Field" but then other people say "Fields" and I just don't know.

Field. :)
This is one of the saddest Ev songs ever, second only to October, I think. :(

I love this song..it reminds me of the Fall and i love the lyrics, they are melancholy but simple and I can relate to them so bad!
Especially the part "somehow it seems colder now"..I feel in that way quite often.
Sometimes Amy's voice in the part "Oh where [..]stranger" makes me cry! :(

This song grew on me so fast. I actually have been listening to Fallen/TOD more and just kicked pre-fallen to the curb. Now Origin is on top :D. I also used to be addicted to the EvEP. I think this is a pretty well "dressed up" demo that was put on Origin to show to labels. Definately it's the best Origin track along with Even In Death.

oh my god.. :( ..
this song is da best for real.. i like everything about it specially the piano and amy lee's voice and it reminds me of how i treat the others and how they treat me ...
..
the best part for me when she said"where my heart has gone trapped in the eyes of stranger.. i want to go back to believe in everything''
and i like the sadness in her voice and how she tried to deliver the meaning of the lyrics to us..
..
thx :)

this song is one of few that makes me actually break into tears simply by listening to it whether i'm happy atm or not. it's truly heartbreaking but a very real story of what happened to amy once her life started spinning out of control (with her sisters death and all that earlier stuff). when she wrote this, i strongly believe it was a reflection of how she was feeling at the time, cause she was losing her childhood at such a young age. it's really sad amy didn't get to enjoy being a kid as long as most people do. and it's not right. and this song shows you just that in a very blunt, sorrowful, yet still obediently acceptive, way.

This song's one of my top 3 by Evanescence. Everything about it's beautiful. I can relate to this song more than most songs. "Somehow it seems colder now." - It does seem colder now, when you really consider it. We used to veiw the world without its cruelness when we were small, but can we now? No, it's hard to do so when you know how the world really is. "I want to go back to believing in everything and knowing nothing at all." - I do, sometimes, because even now when you're aware of the world, when you look at what's pure and beautiful you forget about the rest of the world.
This song reminds me of those perfect summer days when I was little... *sighs*

I can never understand what Ben is saying during the bridge.
All I hear is "As the years pass by (inaudible) the darkness (inaudible) is me."
I think Amy & Ben made really great mixing choices, but I really think they should've turned that vocal track up.

I'm pretty sure we've found out what he says before. ^ I believe it was a excerpt from the Bible. Not sure what though, I've forgot.
But I kind of like the ambiguity of it, I think it adds to the atmosphere of the song that you can't quite hear what he's saying.

Just checked EvRef and you're right, it is a poem. ;) Anyway, here is what he says for anyone who wants a reminder,
As the years pass by before my face
As wars rage before me
Finding myself in these last days of existence
This parasite inside me I forced it out
In the darkness of the storm
Lies an evil
But it's me

This is my favorite pre-Fallen song.
I've always imagined a music video for it.
I remember when I heard this song for the first time. It was so different because I'd heard Fallen and was so used to their songs being hard rocking. I credit songs like this for expanding my taste for other types of music and it shows the diversity of their catalogue.

i remember the very first time i found and listened to this song on youtube in 2005 i think. it was to this children of advent (or whatever its called- its a game?) video that was really good. it was so amazing. i love how songs feel so amazing the very first time you hear it. even years later, its still like a new experience when i listen to it. new details i pick up on, the emotion. it never gets boring

Ironic that this popped up today. I used it in an argumentative timed writing at school today. The prompt was to defend or challenge the statement "with knowledge comes sorrow" (something like that) so I used this song as evidence.

After the release of Together Again and listen many many times, that song give me the vibe of Ev old stuff... So I went to shelter and pick up Origin and I can't stop listen... Especially this song Field of Innocence... I haven't listen for quite a while, but I was happy, because I remember all the lyrics. :D

The one who made this is my hero !
I find myself listening to this song a lot again lately. I think the idea of almost hitting 20 and moving away from home soon is making me think about younger times...
By the way that piano instrumental sounds insanely good! *Wishes he could play piano properly now*
