My friend and I were talking about making our way to the floor. You know, beating our way through. I don't think it'll be possible, I don't wanna risk getting thrown out or anything.. but if we could do it, it would sooo be worth it.
My first Evanescence concert, btw.

Concert review: Evanescence delivers solid set at Warfield
By Jim Harrington
MediaNews
Some people want to write Evanescence off as a band for 14-year-old girls who hate their parents.
That would be hard to do for anyone who saw the group perform on Sunday night in San Francisco. During its headlining show at the Warfield, the quintet from Little Rock, Ark., delivered a solid set that had much appeal for both genders and all ages.
Granted, the capacity crowd was made up mostly of young females, who sang along to every tune played from the band's two albums, 2003's ``Fallen'' and the recently released ``The Open Door,'' like their lives depended on it.
Yet, everyone else in attendance could also grasp what's so special about this band. Evanescence has struck upon a powerfully moving musical hybrid -- equal parts Nine Inch Nails industrial goth, Tori Amos confessional pop and Linkin Park nu-metal -- and it's clearly worked for the group.
The band made a huge splash with ``Fallen,'' a multi-platinum smash that helped Evanescence earn two Grammy Awards -- for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance -- back in 2004.
Earlier this month, Evanescence returned with ``The Open Door,'' which debuted at No. 1 on the album charts and outdistanced that week's second biggest release -- the Killers' ``Sam's Town'' -- by more than 130,000 copies.
The San Francisco date was the last night of a month-long small-venue trek. The band plans to again tour the United States in 2007 to play larger venues than the 2,000-capacity Warfield.
In terms of lineups, it was a much different band on Sunday than the one we first met with ``Fallen.'' Co-founder-guitarist Ben Moody, who co-wrote all 11 of the tracks on ``Fallen,'' was replaced by Terry Balsamo a few years back. Also, Tim McCord has taken over for recently departed bassist William Boyd.
In just about every other regard, little has changed about this band over the years. The concert on Sunday was quite similar to the one Evanescence performed in early 2004 at the San Jose State Event Center.
The new songs fit with the old ones, which was a concern since Moody didn't have a hand in ``The Open Door.'' Vocalist Amy Lee, dressed in the type of goth gear one finds at Hot Topic, was an engaging presence. The stage show utilized enough bright lights to land a fleet of aircrafts. And the concert clocked in at right around an hour -- which is the same length of the SJSU gig.
Taking the stage under a lower-case ``e'' decorated like a thorny crown, an odd move for a band that was once marketed to the Christian music crowd, Evanescence flew out of the gate with an explosive version of the new album's ``Sweet Sacrifice.''
The group stuck with ``Open Door'' for the heavy ``Weight of the World,'' successfully drawing from the soft-loud-soft school of alt-rock, then swung like a wrecking ball through the first album's ``Going Under.''
Lee, a 24-year-old SoCal native, showed a great deal of range as she handled dark rockers like ``Whisper'' and softer tunes such as ``Lithium.'' Much like Sarah McLachlan, Lee has the ability to both warm and chill the listener in the space of a few words on songs like ``Good Enough.''
The vocalist turned up the intensity with a powerful run through the new album's hit single, ``Call Me When You're Sober,'' and later scored with a tremendous take on ``Bring Me to Life,'' which was originally featured on the ``Daredevil'' soundtrack.
Evanescence closed the main set in fine fashion with ``Lacrymosa,'' a tune that was heavy with drama and thick with tension, and then Lee returned with an encore of ``My Immortal.''
That song started out as a solo-piano performance, but that didn't last long. Lee was accompanied on ``My Immortal'' by hundreds of voices. The 14-year-old girls could clearly be heard -- and they weren't singing alone.

Good post Tracie! The show was good and convinced me that I need to buy the CD, which I was previously on the border about.
I only have one concern that I believe the band needs to know about. There was a "photo Nazi" in the crowd. He smelled bad and confronted people in what can only be called an assaulting manor. I was attacked for trying to use my cell phone as a glow stick. He assumed I was taking pictures and told me I had to put my phone away or I would "have a problem." This tactic is not cool in any environment. Even in homeless friendly SF I had trouble with his tactic. Had he been a bum on the street I would have told him he was harassing me and he needed to leave before the police got called. Management needs to know about this guy his smelly aroma and bad attitude.
To put it all in perspective he marched through the crowd pushing and shoving people out of the way dragging people out of their spots in order to force them to prove they had not taken a photo. The he would force them to delete any photo’s he deemed to be in appropriate. The last time I heard of anything like that was the book I read in school about the Gestapo of Nazi Germany.
Again the show was awesome and I really had a good time. The new arrangements of some of the older pieces along with the set list made for a solid Evanescence experience. A much more refined show over the one in Jan 04. I’m totally impressed with how the band. The tow guys left who didn’t record on the album were able to play the new stuff with little or no difficulty.
I have a more detailed review on evboard.com

Hey Tracie, whoever wrote that missed the last song, which was "All That I'm Living For".
Anyway, I had fun. I met tons and tons of people, and eventhough there were little girls screaming, singing in my ear and BIG fanatic people ramming into me in the front trying to make their way in, and we weren't able to take pictures, I still had fun (for the most part.) It was good to finally see Ev perform live, and Amy's so wonderful. I hope to see them come back here in SF again (or somewhere close), but next time, I hope we can take pictures, lol. Oh, and Richie's pretty intimidating. Most of the time when I started mosh dancing he'd look at me weird, but then again all the people around me were twice my size so it's not like just bobbing my head would keep them away.

MY FIRST EVANESCENCE CONCERT DELIVERS LIKE NOTHING ELSE!!!
They were flawless and perfect. The rest of the night was pretty sucky, but for the hour they rocked out on stage, I couldn't have cared less about all of that! Amy honestly sounded perfect to me...and I've never been a huge fan of her live voice. The best part was when she sand the really high part for "Weight of the World". And there really is no better way to hear their music then having it pound through your body. GOSH I love Rocky, he tears those drums up! I was closest to Terry, who got more into it then I would expect after going through what he has. John is super awesome and fun to watch shred the guitar! And I loved TIM! He was really fun, and since my brother knows him, he got my sister and brother in to the show (even though I had to pay $100 on ebay..)! I could go on and on...maybe it would help me realize that I actually DID see them all in the flesh.
I was standing next to a really mature couple (meaning they thought I was annoying by existing), who obviously loved the music, but weren't into the setting. I understand that...I'm short and could barely see over most people's heads...so for that reason I would've liked to have had an arena setting. But the decent closeness made up for it. But I understand that not everybody who loves their music wants to rub up against a bunch of sweaty kids. It's not my favorite...but it was blastful.
No meetage..but maybe someday? I saw John come out and yelled "I love you John" and everybody just looked back at me (well, everbody except John). One guy said "say it louder and he might actually do somthing about it!" but he got on the bus :( . My brother refused to call Tim until after we were driving home. LAME. But I won't complain too much.
A few gripes (none about ev):
-TOO MUCH of the opening band. A for effort, but I was not entertained at all. It didn't help that I was standing in a crappy spot and was thinking I woudn't be able to see Ev, being partched, needing the bathroom, etc...but they didn't make me forget everything like what usually happens for me at concerts. A few songs, I understand, but a whole FREAKING set?? I hated it. Sorry. I'm sure they're not bad, it was just not to my liking AT ALL.
-There were several camera nazis. I took my phone out to read a text and he got RIGHT up in my face.."DOES THAT PHONE HAVE A CAMERA", "yep", "keep it IN YOUR POCKET!!" "okay, sorry". There are much less rude and intrusive ways to enforce rules. And we were taking picture of us by the stage afterwords and screamed he needed to check to make sure we hadn't taken pictures during the show. After he saw that we hadn't he was perfectly nice, but GEEZE...it's not guilty until proven innocent as far as I know.
-The MASSIVE volume of crazy homless people!! Waiting around the tour bus...we couldn't say two words to eachother without sombody asking for money. I lived in New York, so I thought I would be used to it...but they're so FREAKING aggressive there. If I gave money to everybody who asked, I'd be broke. I'm a very empathetic person, so I usually and pretty good about that...but it was excessive. That's one of the reason's we didn't wait around for the band some more..we were getting harassed.
All in all, I have a GREAT new love for Evanecense. They didn't disspoint at ALL...they delivered 1000000%. Even in the crappy circumstances, the band made me forget it and just absorbed their music.

Well, guys, you have to understand that you were never supposed have cameras in the first place. They told people that a bunch of times. They were just doing there job. The band probably had something to do with the no camera rule too. It would get really distracting with all the cameras flashing in your face...especially in such a small place.
But yeah. It was AWESOME!!! I have never been to concert before, so that was a cool for Evanescence to be the first.
Katya
10-30-2006, 04:46 PM
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's more of a label thing than a band thing. I seriously don't think the band cares much; it's the label that specifies whether to allow pictures or not. They're the ones who tell the press people 'okay, first three songs only, then you have to leave,' which is why we never have any press pictures of Amy at the piano.
How strictly it's enforced is really on a venue-to-venue basis. I know halfway2anywhere on EvBoard directly asked Ritchie at the Boston show (concert itself, not before/after) if we could take pictures and he was like 'Oh, absolutely' and we were on the barricade. However, NYC was a different story. The bouncers were pretty strict there.
Tutu Fairy
10-30-2006, 05:59 PM
^ Yeah, that actually makes more sense. :p
But still, the guys that worked there were just doing their job. If you noticed how nasty that area was, you'd understand that they have to be tough there. There are all these homeless guys harrassing people for money, The streets and allies are filled with pee, wich makes the whole area smell that way, etc. So yeah, thats how they have to be. I even watched one of the guys arguing with some homeless guy, and had to call the cops...at least twice about the same guy, because he kept coming back. They might not mean to be so rude when "enforcing the rules", but being in such an area, that's probably just how they are with 'enforcing' stuff. They're used to those guys who harrass, and argue with them. When we were just talking to them, they were very nice. It's like, Ritchie (or Richie. I don't know how he spells his name) was being all tough with making people move back, etc., but when we talked to him personally, he was really nice. He just had to be like that to get people to listen.
:)

I understand no cameras, and I had NO intention to break that rule. I just think you don't have to treat sombody like they've broken a rule when you're not sure if they have. Like I said..innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. I understand your point, and I wasn't bothered the first time. It was the fact that they kept looking at me like I was going to sneak out my 0.00003 pixel cell phone camera the whole time. And I've lived in the city, and I've seen people be decent after dealing with crazy homeless guys.
Anyways, I don't want to make it an arguement, I just didn't want it to seem like "OMG they wouldn't let us take a pictures during the concert...LAME!" Sure it sucked, but I'm not a rule breaker.
Oh! And were you talking about outside after the concert when a guy in a do-rag and a homeless man were screaming at eachother accross the street from the bus?? That was NOT cool. Like I said, A LOT of ruthless homeless people..more then I can be nice to...sorry.

No. It was while I was waiting in line to get in. :p
We actually bought a guy a large hamburger meal/with a strawberry shake though. It was a really nice old guy in a wheelchair...he was telling us about the area and stuff. It freaked me out though, because when we were walking down to Carls Jr. with him, There was another guy in a wheelchair, who was not only freaky looking, but he was freakily watching us as we took this other homeless guy to Carls Jr. You probably had to be there, but it creeped me out. He watched us until we went around the corner and could no longer see us. I'm such a wimp. :p But I'm just not used to being in that kind of an area. It was a good experience though... It made me so much more thankful for the kind of life that I live. I feel sorry for those guys.
Oh, now I understand what you're saying. How you said it before sounded different to me, like you knew you were breaking a rule and crap them for stopping you. :p Sorry. I guess I didn't understand you. But thanks for clearing that up!
They were watching everybody though, my mom had her phone out cause she was waiting for a call, and they started towards her to make sure it wasn't a camera and she said "It's not a camera phone" and they just said like, "oh, ok" and left. They were probably really watching you though because you had a camera phone. They don't know or trust you not to take a picture, so that's probably why they were watching you. But yeah, I know what you're saying.
Did you see the Legolas guy with really pretty hair in like, a half ponytail?!

Hey everyone!
Just got back into town from San Fran and I am SAD the tour is over (for now) All the shows were AMAZING!! I will definitly get a write up on here in the next few.
As for the camera thing, my hubby and I were right up front and center and were talking to a group of girls that were in line since 8am that morning. Well we were having a blast and chatting away and then one of the girls said that she was going to try to take pics. Well being directly infront I told her it would be a difficult thing. The show started and we were all rockin. Evanescence came on and 3 songs later, the girl that was talking about taking pictures was then kicked out!! My heart would SHATTER if I had endured almost 12 hours in line dealing with CRAZY homeless and the cold weather to then get kicked out!! It was a shame. :(
i'm seriously amazed they were SO cranking down on the camera situation. that's terrible. :\ especially for the girl who got kicked out.
i don't think i met anyone of you guys on here except for shonnel and the crew that came up from los angeles, but regardless, it was good meeting you.
i nothing short of thought i was seriously going to get killed out there. rofl. the atmosphere was definitely something i didn't expect but the venue was really pretty. i'm just not looking forward to going back there later this month for a 30stm show. oh man.
but i digress: cheeseburgers are key to survival. :D

Katya,
I'm sorry I didn't make it clearer. I was merely pointing out that there was a "Corporate Nazi" in the crowd. He could have been from BGP-Clear Channel-Live Nation or the Label. He never once in identified himself, so I have no idea what company he represented. My point was to raise awareness in order to possibly bring it to the attention of the band. They (the band) might want to know what their fans are going through in order to see them (the band) live. If they have any input to/through their management they may be able to change the situation. I just wanted to print something the band or representatives of the band might be able to see, in order to effect change.
I do want to add in here I have been the corporate nazi when ushering and it is venue to venue how rules are enforced, but we had to identify our selves. There was a warning and then action and we never threatened someone. The “threatening” thing actually boarders on the illegal. My point here is know who you are addressing. There might be a bratty 12 year old (or someone older acting 12 years old) who is putting up the “your not my mommy” (or the boss of me), but not everyone deserves to be treated that way. I'm simply asking for a little common courtesy and for got sake take a shower you smell like the bums out side! You'll always catch more flies with sugar then with vinegar.
As usual Katya is on her game and thanks for giving me the chance to explain! You rock!
>M

Ahh, I see. I'd put that under the heading of 'venue nazi' myself, but that definitely isn't the point. You're absolutely right that the guy was obscenely rude. Telling people to put away cameras is one thing; being aggressive and in-your-face like that is another. Hopefully, you'll have a better experience next time and said camera nazi will be absent taking an etiquette or hygiene class or something ;)

Yes Dai! It was AWESOME meeting you!! I wish we could have met up sooner! It was a blast and at the same time there was a little fear walking the three blocks back to our hotel after the show but I noticed that if you staggered around (yay for acting drunk!) and asked them (scary homeless people)for change that they automatically turned their backs to you and moved on to the next group of people LOL!

Yes, she looked BEAUTIFUL. It wasn't TOO much, ya know?? I loved when they played that halloweeny music and amy was like "we just play that to scare people." It was funny but I actually thought it sounded really sweet.

That one looked like it was put together in 5 minutes though, lol. I loved it, but it didn't look like a major masterpiece like her others (but yes I loved it.) Well, that, or maybe all these little girls getting aggressive made me not see her attire clearly. I'm still kinda sad that I didn't have pictures to walk away with. I wonder what their reasons were? I would have understood "no flash", but I didn't get the whole "no cameras" thing. I was bummed out about that.

Just wondering, did anybody get to meet Amy afterwords?? I saw John come out, but then I had to leave. I wanted to know if I would've seen her if I had waited.

Yeah, she came out to sign stuff. she wasn't really talking to anybody though, just signing. No pictures either. She probably just wanted to get out of that crap hole of a place as fast as possible. John came back out not too long after too. But the homeless guys were there the whole time. :p

it looked like there was a fight starting up, from the stage. to think that was just a camera recall is all sorts of crazy. man.

i know! i was walking around earlier in the day with a couple of friends, got some starbucks and whatnot, but i didn't spot you in line. then i saw you from the stage right in dead front center, and managed to grab you after the show, which was entirely by chance. LOL. but hey, yeah, it was nice meeting you. :) ...LOL OH, MAN. the bums. that experience will never fade away. ever. a few were hanging out by our bus after ... jack was dancing with them a bit. it was good times.

she wore that outfit at the first show, and a few scattered out, too. i really like it, too. it's cute.

Yeah I think that was my friend who told you that, LOL. I never knew how bad the bums were in SF, eventhough I do live half an hour away. I was amazed (or disgusted?) as well, but it was worth it. I got to stay in the front (well, most of the time, then I pushed or got pushed from the rail to 3 people away from the rail. But again, I had so much fun! They definitely have to come back to SF, except next time, earlier so Amy and the band can breifly come out and sign autographs.:p
