how does this work? i thought like they sold just over 850 K?

Fallen was released March 4, 2003.
The album went platinum on April 21,2003
The Open Door was released October 3,2006
The album has gone platinum November 8/9th...it's not on RIAA's site and that's what I'm going by for right now so I guess I'll wait for the official date.
The Open Door beats out Fallen as the fastest to go platinum.
http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/riaa/index.jsp
Just to give you an idea of how quick they've gotten up there in this day in age...
It took Hinder almost a year and a smash hit single to hit platinum.
The Fray's album took a year to hit platinum.
And it took Now 21 (a collection of the most popular singles around) 5 months to go platinum.
With the music business as singles based as it is now, it's so much harder to go platinum than albums used to. To do what they've done in a month plus, is great.
how does this work? i thought like they sold just over 850 K?
If you go to the website, you'll notice that it's about how much you ship...not how much you sell. Labels are all about supply and demand these days and you don't just get handed a gold record anymore.
Labels ship out a certain amount of copies if they feel the artist will sell at least close to that many.

I bought two copies so it feels good to know that my 2 were part of the first million.
I know that here in the states it take a million records to get platinum status.
I couldn't be more excited that Evanescence has already made it there. I just hope sales keep rising and that this isn't where people stop buying.

wow they totally deserve this, they worked so hard on this album to make it the best cd there is right now, they totally showed the ppl who doubted them.
didn't they recieve platinum status in another country? one that takes a lot less records? I could be mistaken though

That was a bit bloody quick!
Well... there you have it. Good for them. :)
Thats awesome, do you guys think it will sell as much as fallen? How has it been selling in Europe? Just as well I'm guessing...

Well, I purchased the iTunes download so I could get TLSIWOY. Then I got one the day of it's release. Got another one a couple of weeks later so I could take it with me to the Dallas concert and then forgot to pack it in my suitcase. And I got a fourth one at the show.
Why did I buy another one? I had to have something for them to sign.

And since people like Dhamma are still just buying theirs, I'm sure the album will go multi-platinum soon. :p Anyway, I'm glad that I played a minuscule role in the band's success

Allright! that's great news it happened so quickly. But to me it's no surprise considering how much it sold the first week! I think it will at least surpass 6x platinum in the US and could reach 10x platinum and correct me if i'm wrong but if it reaches 10x platinum isn't it gonna be certified diamond?
Cfw828
11-09-2006, 10:08 AM
That is correct. Although, I don't see diamond status happening.
If I'm not mistaken, the last recent album to receive a diamond award for an album was Norah Jones and it was early last year.
It's so much harder to get a diamond award than it used to be...and even then it was hard.

I thought it had already. your country only requires 70,000 for an album to go Platinum and I think TOD did so a week or so ago.
Here's the info from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Open_Door)
Australia ARIA Top 50 Albums
(Certified x1 Platinum; 70,000+ units)
Week 01 02 03 04 05

I think Lithium is going to do worlds for TOD sales. If Lithium wasn't on the album I don't think it could do as well as Fallen. But I'm interested to see how album sales change once Lithium is released. It's going to be huge.

In the link to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Open_Door) article that's in my last posting, it says as of the fifth week, TOD has had 1,903,000 units shipped world wide according to the United World Chart.

LOL! Some people are just in an alternate world all their own.
I also bought two copies. I never play my CD and it's still in my dvd drive now that i think about it, from when I burned it the day I got it.
I can't wait for the second single to drop.

Congratulations to Amy, John, Terry, Rocky, and Tim!! TOD is officially by no means a "sophomore slump" now. This band deserves every bit of the success it is getting from this album because I think it proves that all of the members have overcome the negative things from the last three years that plagued the making and releasing of the album.

Is gold higher than platinum?
I think we should go on an Ev extravaganza and buy all the copies of the cd in Wal-Mart.
:p
Is gold higher than platinum?
No, you get gold first. I'm not sure if it's universal, but to go gold you have to sell 500,000 albums, platinum I'm sure is a mill. There is also a multi-platinum for when you hit 2 mil+... then you've got the infamous diamond where you hit the 10 mill mark. ::Recalls the days when she was younger and the Backstreet Boys went diamond:: Though I might be missing something... I've never been good with that either, to be honest.
Congrats to all the guys, Amy, and Tim for joining them and killing it on the tour! We'll see what happens when Lithium drops. That's definitely what I'm waiting to see now.

I'm not sure if it's universal.
It's universal in the system is always gold--platinum--multiplatinum. The only difference is in the numbers. If I'm not mistaken, the next highest as far as album sales/shipments are concerned is the UK then Canada and Australia in that order.
BTW, as good as it's doing right now, I wouldn't be surprised if you see another 100,000+ sales week before the year is out with the holiday season coming up.
