I didn't know if we wanted to discuss this cover, it's on the Going Under single..
I just found a YouTube'd vid of a performance of it..
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tB_q7j-cyY8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tB_q7j-cyY8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I really love this cover...and I think the audio in that vid is a little off.
already watched that vid on you tube so won't watch it again but the calabaration is great, don't blame you for bringing it up... i thought the audio was sound when i watched it about 2 weeks ago

While I like Evanescence's acoustic cover, I prefer the original by Nirvana.

Does Amy's voice give out in the end? Or was that supposed to happen?
And I got my GU single in a bundle with BMTL, Lithium, and 2 CMWYS singles. I'm pretty sure the same record shop is selling similar bundles on eBay.

I'm quite sure she made it raspy on purpose, similar to how she does in Good Enough.

I love this cover. We all know that Nirvna covers tend to be stunning failures (Whoever covered "Breed" and got it played all over the radio should be shot, and Flyleaf's less-than-wonderful cover of "Teen Spirit") but thisone is so good. I love the way Amy improvises with the "your advice"s at the end.

How can you hate Nirvana? Shuuuuun! :p
This wasn't a bad cover, but it wasn't awesome either. The music was good and all, but I have to agree with some of those YouTube comments, they shouldnt've touched the song with a 3821904284230945 ft. pole .

Its a great cover and like the above i can hear the words for a change!!
The best bits are Amy's low voice and the rasp at the end.

If you mean mess them up, then no. She sings the correct lyrics.

They actually play this on the radio here. apparently this was recorded at 105.9 the X which is the alternative station in Pittsburgh. It blew my mind when I heard it. I didnt even know it was recorded here until I posted about it.
But anyway, its a nice cover. probably my favorite cover by Ev, except for maybee Toughtless.

^ Yes, that's the version that was featured on the Going Under Single. I actually have a recording of the song when it was live on the radio station. There is a little bit of talking at the end between the DJ and Amy and Ben. It's not as good quality as it is on the Going Under Single (which I own), but it affirms that it was definitely live and not recorded and edited in a studio like some people seem to think (*Ahrm* Nirvana's page for "Heart-Shaped Box" on Wikipedia  ).
Anyways, the video that the thread starter posted here is actually a completely different live version from an interview in Australia during 2003 (I think they have shown it on some TV show?).

I had the version that was played on the station downloaded, but my harddrive on my old laptop crashed and now I have to go find it again.
I remember at the end of the song, Amy says something like "Oh, you meant to do that" or something.

If you still want the file that includes the talking at the end, here it is:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/nu98u3
This is the conversation that they have at the end:
Amy: Oh, you meant to do that.
Ben: Yeah, that was intentional.
Amy: [Laughs]
DJ: Nice. Evanescence live in Studio X, channeling the spirit of Kurt and company.
Ben & Amy: [Laugh]
DJ: Find these guys online at Evanescence.com and onstage tonight at Nick's Fat City, the sold out X Low-Dough Show for SR-71. I guarantee it will be the last time anybody will see you guys for five bucks.
Amy: [Laughs] Thank you.
Ben: [Laughs]
DJ: That will be my prediction. Thank you guys very much for coming in.
Ben & Amy: Thank you.
DJ: Uh, have a good show tonight and, uh, we look forward to, uh, all that good stuff coming on Tuesday on the Fallen CD.
Amy: Thanks a lot.
DJ: More to come-
Enjoy! ;)

I was blown away by this when I first heard it. (and thanks EvenInDeath for that direct). This actually made me want to absolutely nail this guitar, and after MANY failed attempts, I did. I was drawn to it, and was actually the first Ev acoustic I spent more time with. After I got the guitar down, I added the vocals. Amy's vocals seem so rich and relaxed..giving it a tender but dark prescence. I love the rough edged lingering end notes. She's done that with some other songs, but it's more noticable here. It's sultry in a dark way. I think her voice shows an uncommon strength with this song. Almost like you're amazed to hear this cover sound like that. I love these lyrics. It mixes love, sarcasm, hatred, and defiance.
I love both versions, and am also a fan of Nirvana.

I'm sure I saw a video of Ev performing this song as a whole band - it was a home made video and Amy had black angel wings on. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I think it was pre-Fallen, but only just....

However, I'm not a big fan of how she made her voice raspy at the end. I don't think it really fits the cover.

According to this site, Ev's cover for this song was one of the best:
12. Evanescence – Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana): Amy Lee is one of the few vocalists who could have pulled this off. Almost as haunting and tortured as the original.
I absolute agree! :D

I love this cover too. Absolute acoustic perfection. I will disagree with you on your last comment though. I like how Amy's voice is raspy in the end. It is a minor echo of the original where Kurt Cobain's voice is raspy throughout. Anyway, beautiful. ;)

I agree :D. I mean I did get used to the raspy ending but the first listen was a bit of a turn off :p. The song had some smooth vocals and then came the raspy vocals, the transition was really abrupt, so it seemed not to flow together. I still like it though.

Yep that's it, it was the New Years Eve performance back in Little Rock, AR in 2002. They also did a few more covers at that show. I adore this cover, the acoustic performance of it is my favorite.

I agree! Nirvana would be a hard band to cover, but Amy does an amazing job. Actually I love this cover almost as much as the original:D
