The place to discuss The New chart topping Evanescence album THE OPEN DOOR!

I love the album the more I listen to it and considering how "non-commercial" like it is, it's really doing well on the charts!

It's still no.1 in Australia (i'd really like to see if it maintains its place next week or if Jet or The Killers take over)

it's moved to #2 on itunes though

Yeah, I'm falling in love with The Open Door one song at a time. I keeping looking at the lyrics, playing the songs in different orders, turning the hard ones up and rockin out, or cranking the slow ones and chilling in the dark. Ha, now when I go out somewhere all I need is my watch, wallet, cellphone, keys, and my EvCD! Only the essentials.

honastly, i really do love the album
but it's something i try not to listen to over and over
i try to keep it fresh and not overplayed if that makes sence?
when I first listened to it, I did have this instant 'love it' reaction
my favourite track would have to be your star.
I love the build up to the heavy parts and the light and dark feeling
I don't think I could ever compare Fallen and The Open Door to pick a 'better favourite' as i think that both are complete different pieces of art.

Brilliant album and I am really satisfied.

Thi cd is so well written, well played, well sung that makes us fans so proud of the band.. Thanks for making an awesome cd guys.. we couldn't have hoped for something better than this!

Well at first, I honestly was like "WTF?" when I heard the album. It seemed unorganized, too experimental for my taste and just...weird but it definitely grew on me after playing it a couple times over. Now it's one of my fave's! It kicks ass live too. Glad the band is doing well with record sales and such, they deserve it. We waited 3 years for this, and I don't know about you guys, but I'm 100% satisfied and it was definitely worth the wait :)

Definitely worth the wait! I'm waiting for the guys to kick it live in Milan next month!

I love it! Every song is great so it's hard to pick a favourite but I like "Like you" very much!
It was absolutely worth the wait.'

Amys voice is absolutely wonderful and the lyrics are just WOW!
Love it, love it, Love it!! :P

I'll confess I only liked a couple of tracks on a first listen through, but after a second listen, the CD started to grow on me. Now I absolutely love it. It's NOT just Fallen Part Two, despite what a lot of reviewers have said--just like Origin before it, it has its own unique sound. And I lurve it. I'm especially glad that the band did what they wanted to with this album instead of trying to be commercial and sell more albums. Worth the wait? Definitely.

Well, honestly, on first listen I was dissapointed.. I don't know why, but it was just so different that it was kind of hard to grasp the new sound on the first listen. The only tracks I liked was Lithium and Lacrymosa.

However, this album is definately a grower, and it has grown on me. The tracks 'Snow White Queen' and 'Lose Control' which I really disliked to start with, I absolutely love now. There's not one track on the album that now I don't like.. there's some such as Good Enough, Lithium, Lacrymosa, The Only One which really stand out to me to be very powerful tracks.. those are my favourites from the album.

I'm glad I was dissapointed to begin with.. I'm glad there's a new sound, and that you can seperate Fallen from The Open Door and recongise how different they are. I'd rather have that than a Fallen Part 2, because it wouldn't have been anything new.

It's been the only album I've listened to in the past couple of weeks, and I love it and I'm so glad we've got new music from Evanescence again.

I too was disappointed a bit on the first listen, as it was very different from fallen, but after hearing it again and again it really grew on me. it has been going in the car on the way to work and back since it come out! Now i really love it!

Derek
10-13-2006, 05:23 AM
I think I might have been one of the few who wasn't disappointed on the first listen.

If anything I was relieved that it was such a deep record and didn't suffer from the dreaded 'sophmore slump'. (Even though Fallen was really not their first CD, it was their first 'mainstream' CD)

I fell in love with the album on the first time of hearing it and to be completely there isnt one song on the album that I dislike, the album has a mix of everything. I have listened to the album everyday since I had it and I am not feeling it too "overplayed". I am a happy bunny.

I listen to the album everyday on my way to and from work. A copy of the original lives in my car's CD player (I wouldn't want to scratch the proper version!)

It's a brilliant album, and the artwork is breathtakingly beautiful, I love it.

IAW Princess_Diane and Silently Broken. I absolutely love the album, and I'll even say that I love it more than Fallen. You can tell that the band has grown, and Amy's voice has become so much more powerful and stronger. I can relate to it a lot more than I could to Fallen, and I like the sound of everything. I have an hour drive to the train station every day (and an hour drive home), and it's all I've had in the CD player since October 3rd. Anytime anyone asks me about it, I tell them it's wonderful. And hearing the songs live made it even better for me.

it took me 6 months to get into fallen and a week to get into the open door. so i prefer the latter

Derek
10-13-2006, 06:40 AM
It's weird..The Open Door is supposed to be less mainstream sounding but I find the lyrics more addicting on that record.

Where's the sense in that?

SweetSacrifice
10-13-2006, 07:40 AM
I don't know what it was, call it a feeling in my bones if you will, but from the first few lines of Sweet Sacrifice, I knew I was going to love the entire album.

There's something so...pure, heartfelt about this album, which really captivates me. I was so anxious about this album, wondering if I would like it etc, as Fallen is one of the few albums I can listen to all the way through and not get bored.

When I first heard Call Me When You're Sober, I have to be honest and say I was slightly 'meh' about it, I wasn't sure, it was very different to what I was expecting the song to be like. However, after a couple of listens, it all changed and I loved it! No more "woe is me", and more "Screw you" - love it.

As great as CMWYS is, it doesn't do the album any justice, as the rest of the songs just kick CMWYS ass into the ground. CMWYS is a fantastic song and I love it, but, I do just prefer other songs on the album

Personal favourites are Lacrymosa, Your Star, Sweet Sacrifice, Lose Control (the moany wails are so spine-tingling, I love it), and Lithium.

i give this album 5 out of 5 stars, it hasn't left my cd player yet, and I can't see it doing so for a while.

Amazing album, I loved it from the first time I heard it, I think the open door is at number 2 in the UK album charts, my favourite song is All that I'm living for. But I do love all of the songs very much, I cant wait to see them perform the songs (and some off fallen) next month in London.

With Fallen I always skipped couple songs but with The Open Door... I don't want know there's a last song because I would love that it never ends.
Amazing.

Honestly, at first listen, I really didn't like this album. It has definitely grown on me though, and I pretty much love every song on it. My favorites would have to be: Sweet Sacrifice, Call Me When You're Sober, Lithium, Lacrymosa, and Your Star. I love them all, though. I'm actually finding that I can't listen to their older music much anymore, that's how much more I like this album. :)

10-13-2006, 08:21 AM
I have to say I wasn't quite impressed at first listen. But TOD is one of those albums that grow on you the more you listen to it.

The only songs I skip on the album are Lose Control and The Only One. Other than those, I'd never thought I'd say it but I actually think The Open Door is BETTER than Fallen

Oooh .. forgot to mention, my favourite tracks have to be Weight of the World and Lacrymosa! I can't get enough of those two.

First off, the music is sooo great. The art is just so mind blowing it's like, "Whoa...I'm so proud that I LOVE this band.." and it makes my heart happy. When I tell people my favorite artist/band is Evanescence, I say it with more pride now. A lot of people still know them for "Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal" and if they mention those songs, I'll say, "Oh, hehe, you should really check out their new album! You won't regret it, it's kick <insertalternativeworrdforbutthere>!!!!!!!!!!!" Some listen, some don't, but for those who don't....that's their problem.

The art is so..more complex now..and honestly I have no words except that it makes me happy, all the time, no matter how "depressing" the song is or whatever. It just makes me happy.

True music artists make art, and Ev. is a true music artist.

I can't say I loved it when I first gave it a listen, but I definitely wasn't disappointed either. Fallen blew me away... just blew me right out of my socks. TOD didn't do that, but I wasn't upset or disappointed or anything. It's a good album, and like some people have already stated - I'm just plain happy to have Evanescence putting out new music and getting back out there. I <3 you guys.

All That I'm Living For is not pleasant to me... My favourite songs are Lacrymosa and Your star!!! TOD is amazing!!!. Amy is the good fellow. She has made what she wanted, instead of what all expected! It is very courageous act! I love TOD, but Fallen is very dearto me, because songs from this album were the first which I have heard, and owing to them I have grown fond of Evanescence!

just an illusion

You know, I couldn't even imagine, I'd like anything better, than Fallen. But now I can't even listen to Fallen, cause it's so "childish". Like Amy has said - she's grown up on TOD. It's an amazing album, I'm so happy, that I like it (I didn't think, I'd like it at all) and I like it the best. Such an awesome felling. ^_^

I love the new album. I was so scared I wouldn't like it at all, but I think it's just as good, if not better than Fallen. I feel like (I hope this isn't too blasphemous) the sound is a little more kidneythieves, which I love. If anything, it's less poppy than Fallen was. And I think Terry is amazing. I love it that he can make guitar sound really good and beautiful without trying to do crazy solos and fast licks and whatever, and just let it be the amazing instrument it is.

My favorite song is probably Sweet Sacrifice. Or maybe Weight of the World.

The Open Door is the best! Every time when I'm listening to "Like you", I can't stop crying.
Amy, you formed the feelings that were taking me when my brother has gone. You sing about your sister, but I feel it's like about my brother. Thank you so much! You and your band create things, that help us to live.

I'm in awe with this album. It's definately something special, and I'm not being biased either :p The content is perfect, it's so versitile and there is something for every mood which is great. I don't really know what else to say about it to be honest, other than the best way for me to review it is to record every expression on my face while I listen to it ;)

I really enjoy listening to this album, it's like my college anthem haha. Anyways, I think it's a helluva lot better than fallen, a lot more creative and original...
I can't really think of a song that doesn't stand out to me. It's funny, it's like Evanescence that we know, but so much more mature like Amy said.
I LOVE Lose Control and Your Star... I also love how Amy is all operatic and stuff in WOTW.. I'm really looking forward to hearing EV live in November.

When I first hear the album (no dates include), I personaly have to say I was NOT so much into it. I mean, I like all the new guitar power and this whole new ''era'' they've created, though I thought there was something missing. Something from Fallen or whatever.
Though, the most I hear, the most I was enjoying this new sound of Evanescence. A much growner sound, this not-so-fairy tale life, but a REAL life put into words. And hell I like that after.
Now I'm in total love with it.
There are great and gorgeous songs like Your Star, Lacrymosa, Like You... and some not so good (on my oppinion) that was Good Enough.
They're great, don't get me wrong. But let's say it's not MY tipe.

I'm really looking for to see the band playing live, this TOD's tour it's surely be a HELL of a tour.

I was blown away the first time I heard TOD. Their sound has evolved so much since Fallen, even Origin. Its like a whole new band. (technically it is lol). I love the sound that they have created on this album and WOW you feel like you are going through all the pain right with Amy as she belts it out. To make music this raw and personal is a hard thing to do and Amy is the definition of perfection. I listen to this over and over and can't seem to get sick of it. Having a female for a lead singer draws more attention to a band because I feel that females are more personal and deep (sorry guys!). There isn't a track on TOD that i don't love. Great job Ev, thanks for the best cd realeased in the past 2 years!

I'm gonna be honest. I'm not sure it's better than Fallen. I think Fallen is better, but it doesn't mean TOD is bad! It's got some great songs, like; Lacrymosa, CMWYS, Weight of The World, Lithium, Snow White Queen, Like You, The Only One, All That I'm Living For and Good Enough. OK, i mentioned most, they're really good, but something is missing. I also think The Last Song I'm Wasting On You should've been in the album, because I love it, more than all the songs above. The album is good, I never thought it wouldn't be, but the sound is not the Ev I learnt to love, even though I do like it a lot.

while I was so excited to have new material, FINALLY....after listening to it....while I do enjoy each song on it's own, I've found that if I listen to the album as a whole, there's to many slow songs for my taste. If that makes any sense. So from an album stand point, Fallen is better (I'm not getting in to Origin as Amy has said before that it's not an album, even if fans consider it to be one) IMHO, but the material on TOD is great...just...not all at once.lol

on a side note, listening to Snow White Queen makes me cringe almost, and I just hope that Amy knows that not all of her fans are stalkers :p there are SOME sane ones....heheh...

well my fav song of the album was sweet sacrifice!!!!!! :p great song, i love the background arrangements, guitars, voice EVERYTHING a lot,

and bout the album well, as the band has said it's different i must say like Bob Ross they had "happy notes" (well bob ross said "happy paintings" and "happy mistakes"), i mean they played a lot with different kind of sounds, the arrangements are different, the guitars are different, the piano it's different, the voice, amy did a lot of "happy things" with her voice he played with these very low notes, and special effects, well whatever, this album is more professional, hehe but i liked fallen more than this one, hehe hope u don't kick me because of this, but even so, i have to recognize that they did a so much more professional, and different album :p

Before buying the album I thought to myself that I'd dislike it (after only hearing "CMWYS"), however I honestly believe it wipes the floor with 'Fallen' and 'Origin'. It's a great album, and Terry's guitar parts suit the voice dramatically more than Ben's. No disrespect to Ben, he played a huge part in making what Evanescence is today, but the songs are so much more interesting. There's also a lack of 'TOM' and 'MLB' type songs, which was a huge relief as I can't say I particulary ever liked them much. On the other hand, 'Farther Away' and 'Breathe No More' will be greatly missed in the new setlists, and 'Whisper' and 'My Immortal' will always remain classics.

I love how the album really shows how much the band has grown as musicians. It's so different from "Fallen", so I can't really compare the two, but I'll just say that I really enjoy the album. Do I like it as much as I did "Fallen"? Yeah, at the moment, I think I do. I actually like "The Open Door" better than "Fallen."

I know this is a little backwards from everyone but to be honest, I actually liked this album a lot more when I first heard it than I do now.

I think I was really excited to have new material, but now . . . I have little annoyances throughout the album that kind of make me want to skip an entire song sometimes.

As a whole, I can listen to the album straight through (though I usually skip "Good Enough") and appreciate it for a piece of art. As individual songs, there are many that I skip, or I skip parts in (such as, in "Like You," I usually don't get into the song until the "you're not alone . . . no matter what they told you" part).

I realize that I am like the complete opposite from everyone else, as there are those who hated the album upon first listening and now love it, or those who love the album as individual songs but can't listen to it as a whole. :p

Note: I don't think the album is bad, nor do I hate it, at all. I hear some kidneythieves influence on this record. And I <3 the Kidneythieves. :D

I've been looking forward to this album for such a long time I was scared that I would be dissapointed,
but after listening a couple of times it was even better than I had hoped for.

The last couple of weeks I'v played TOD over and over again.
I hope I don't get sick of it before I'm going to their show next month:)

And besides listening to the album it's great just to look at it, I really love the artwork on the cd cover.

I really love TOD!!! At the beginning I was a little sceptical about it, because I didn't really liked CMWYS and thought that the album was like that...but after I heard it a few times, I was totally blown away!
I don't know why, but Lacrymosa won't grow on me...

At the moment I can't say if I like TOD better or fallen. TOD is new and that's why I listen to it everyday. I think in a few months I will be able to say which one I like better, when TOD won't be so new anymore.

What my overall opinion about "The Open Door" boils down to is that I love it. I love that it's more creative and that the band has managed to take a step forward with it. It also makes me look forward to future albums by them.

I have been going through stages with it where sometimes I think that there should be 'more of this' and 'less of that' but all in all, I am happy with what they have produced. What mattered to me the most is that I was into what I was hearing at 'first play' so that always scores major points with me. You grab my attention and you've done something right.

I hope that they will not be afraid to keep on pushing the limits and coming up with 'new' things for their sound as they grow. :)

Ok so, I've really been overdoing TOD and Flyleaf lol, It's all I've been listening to since the Beginning of September. I'm giving my ears a rest now and am adding more songs from other artists, I'm really getting into Bjork at the mo haha.
So my playist is now about 170 songs instead of 31 or something. More choice, less EV. I know how sick I got of Fallen after a while and I refuse to do that with TOD lol.
Funny, I got sick of Fallen after a few weeks, but it's been over a month and I'm not sick of TOD.
Must be coz I like it better, I really do like the more mature sound, and the blunter lyrics. I like the sexy tracks like Cloud Nine (the music trés Shexy) and Lose Control. I love the Nursery Rhyme reference in LC also.
Ok *stops reviewing* haha, anyways yeh.
I'm giving myself a break unless it comes on. I'm just glad we have live and acoustic versions to listen to aswell :p

I love the album, and each song has its own creativity. The same goes to Fallen. The Open Door is sort of the improved Fallen, cuz the sound is way much better and the lyric still stays on the same dark road. I just wished that the lyric blends with mystical or mythical being, it'll sort of make it way cooler. Maybe on the next album. -still hoping-

Kicks Fallen's ass, for sure.

I love this album. I can listen to it 3x in a row.

Lithium is probably my favorite song. It shows just how powerful, dynamic, and generally awesome Amy's voice is. Like You and Cloud Nine and All that I'm Living For are favorites of mine. And Sweet Sacrifice is one of the strongest opening tracks of any album released in recent times.

Like You is a really damn depressing song though...seriously, it makes Hello seem bright and cheerful by comparison.

Overall this is a pretty amazing album. There's a few flaws(Lose Control and Good Enough) but overall it's a solid piece of work.

Did I mention Amy's voice is amazing? Seriously. She completely and utterly overwhelms almost everything else. May as well be A Capella for all the attention I pay to the instruments. It even distracts from the rather headbangingish and in-your-face guitars of Cloud Nine. That's how utterly strong her voice is.

9/10 for this album. Great work guys.

Album art gets a special mention, too.

Fallen through The Open Door

Evanescence’s second studio album ‘The Open Door’ opens with the strong, hard hitting rock song Sweet Sacrifice which signals the end of Fallens theme of vulnerability and begins TOD’s theme of empowerment. This crisp introduction proceeds into first single Call Me When Youre Sober with its chugging riffs and blunt lyrics reflecting Amy Lee’s new found strength. Contrasting these two epic rock efforts are the three ballads of the album. The tense, mournful Like You explores Amys longing desire to be with a lost loved one and gives a glimpse of weakness which is also apparent in the melodic, self-doubt filled Lithium. This uncertainty is ultimately eclipsed by happiness though in last track Good Enough which soothes via its potent combination of piano graced with Lees stunning vocals. The albums beautiful centerpiece Lacrymosa is a magnificent metal adaptation of a part of Mozart’s Requiem. Amy Lees delicate voice entwined with a string orchestra result in the best song of the album and possibly of Evanescence to date. The pulsating eastern motif filled rock track Weight of the World delivers a fresh sound by the band whilst the resonating Your Star depicts loneliness with its slow, solemn intro and intricate guitar playing. The two heaviest tracks on TOD are the chilling Cloud Nine with its constant studio effects and the spiritual The Only One which has a thumping backdrop and inspiring lyrics. Snow White Queen is an enchantingly gothic song which delves into both a victim and stalkers mind. This track is brilliantly disorganized and reminds me of Haunted with its pure darkness. This darkness becomes even more sinister in Lose Control which has wonderful guitar riffs and delightful metaphors. Lees severely distorted vocals result in this being the most unique track of the album. Finally we have John LeCompts contribution in All That Im Living For, a predictable song which lacks the albums endearing quality of adventure and experimentation.

Overall a brave and beautiful sophomore effort by Evanescence which gives you insight into Amy Lees world. B+

Everyone's pretty much summed it up, but all I can say to express my love for this album is that since I downloaded it from iTunes the day of the release, I've had it spinning almost nonstop, and thus far have listened to it (in full) 38 times. Including the bonus track. Love much?

I think TOD is a VERY strong follow up to Fallen. I give it a 95 percent, knocking 5 percent off for Cloud Nine, which just doesn't do it for me. But overall, I'm blown away by the new songs. Amy should be very proud.

I give TOD a 93% because Good Enough just is not my forte at all. Other than that, though, I love every minute of the remainder of the album, but I still try not to overplay it, like someone else said. I just pick a different order to play the songs in every time I feel like listening to the album and, many times, I go 4 or 5 days without listening to the album at all because I don't want to tire of it before the Phoenix concert. Despite that, though, I am still very much blown away by the new music, and I definitely can make the claim that the album as a whole is not a "sophomore slump."

I definitely felt the same way. Loved every single song from the very beginning, and now love them more and more as I listen to them and find out how many little detail each of them has

I just don't understand how it's possible to love every song from one artist... Always there are some songs that you don't like or are just "listenable", but with Evanescence it's just like...Undescribeble.... When I heard the Lacrymosa teaser, I knew I was gonna love it... I also like the album design.. Firstly, the whole concept, the fairy-tale feeling it brings, also the little details, like the little symbols above the song lyrics...

I'm so looking forward to the next single, mostly in hope that there will be B-side track... I'd love to hear the music that she wrote for Narnia...

If you'd seen the Metal Edge for November, Lacrymosa was one of those songs.

That would have been a cool song to put somewhere in the movie.

"The Narnia Song" isn't an actual title...and for that matter was pretty much scrapped anyway aside from the intro.

The Official B-sides of the album, according to that same Metal Edge issue (the one where they're on the cover), are "The Last Song I'm Wasting on You", "Together Again", and "If You Don't Mind".

The reason, they're not among Evboard songs is that they hadn't been released to the public.

No word on whether they'll use them for an upcoming soundtrack, hold them off for their next album, or when Ev gets far enough in their career whether they'd be used for some sort of greatest hits compilation.

All other bands that I love have got songs that are not really my favourites, but
I love all Ev songs. That's the reason I've been dieing to hear the new album
for like 2 years. I knew I was gonna love TOD, even before I heard a single second of it.

At the first listen I was a bit overwhelmed by the new sound. But within a day of

that there's still no Evanescence song that I don't like.:)

When I got the album I was a bit skeptical at first because of the many times I've been dissappointed by second efforts, however after two plays I instantly loved it as much as the first one. I've now come to like it as much as the first. The singing is so addictive, and the way the music pounds and the lyrics haunt are all incredible. Plus, it has the best last song I've heard on an album. Good Enough is one of my favourite Ev songs. There was no sophomore slump here. It seems that even without Mr. Moody Amy and co. can still put together one hell of an album. I've listened to it around 15 times now and it keeps getting better every time I hear it. Easily one of the best of 2006 thus far.

I just found cool post by David Hodges on Trading Yesterday's message board (http://www.tyboard.com/viewtopic.php?p=17498&highlight=#17498) about his thoughts on The Open Door:

so i went to my first evanescence concert (post leaving) last night. and i must say, i enjoyed it quite a bit. i'm amazed at how amy lays into every song. very impressive.

about the record (i'm not going to get into it fully now because it's a bit late): you guys are crazy. the record, as a whole, has such a better sense of movement and pace than fallen. fallen has some songs that i love, but from beginning to end the open door feels like a real album. maybe not as easily digestible on the first listen, but there's so much musical depth to this project. what is initially easy on the ears so often gets old. i would be surprised to hear someone say that they didn't like this record more and more with each listen.

"good enough", "cloud nine", "weight of the world", "good enough", "all that i'm living for", and "good enough". you should listen to these tracks again. and then listen to dave campbell's strings on "good enough" again because they will make you a better person.

That was a very good and very positive review. I can tell that the reviewer had his facts straight because he seems to have actually listened to the CD beforehand and liked the music very much because he had nothing negative to say about any of the songs, except All That I'm Living For, but I can understand that because the song is a little annoying with Amy's voice as high as it is in the chorus.

Also, I don't know if this is the right thread to put this, but I saw an advertisement on The Open Door on television about 6:15 or so local time here. The advertisement had the CMWYS video in it and was giving the album good praise based on quotes from Blender Magazine a while back. Then, at the very end, the announcer mentioned that the album was available everywhere and that everyone should go out and buy a copy of it. I don't know about any of you guys, but I felt very proud to see that ad because it was the first time I had ever seen Evanescence advertised on television.

i have always loved Lacrymosa, Lithium and Sweet Sacrifice from first listen but the others are kinda competing with each other for my attention............

When i first listened to the album i was quite impressed. On the first few days that I had got the album, I was eager to listen to it as soon as I could. Time or place didn't matter.

My favorite songs on the album are: The Only One, Your Star, Lithium, Lacrymosa and Good Enough.
When I listen to it more, I become more familiar with the sound so at each time I listen to it, I discover small things.

I like the fact that the band didn't stay in the 'Fallen' direction.
I like the fact that the band weren't afraid to go out of the box.

I absolutely hated Your Star the first time I heard it as well, but it eventually grew on me with many more listens and has now blossomed into one of my most favorite songs on the album. I am not a "veteran" of Evanescence, but I still love all their music... except for The Open Door. About 1 or 2 years ago, I didn't really listen to a lot of music, but then I was watching MTV2 for some random reason, and I saw the Video Mods for Bring Me to Life and Everybody's Fool. I had to check out the rest of the songs by this band, and bought Fallen because it was awesome. I still love it. I gradually collected the rest of their music, and loved it, too. When I heard Evanescence was coming out with a new album, I was really excited. After a few months, I heard their first single was to be called "Call Me When You're Sober." This disturbed me a little because it seemed very out of character for Evanescence. When the song finally came out, my suspicion was just reinsurred. This album might be the end for Evanescence and me. When the album finally cam out, I told myself "I have to like! It's Evanescence after all." I listened to it a lot, but I never got the same amount of enjoyment from listening to Fallen or any other of their songs. I couldn't figure it out. I thought about it, and finally came to a conclusion. Many, actually. There were many reasons why I didn't like Evanescence's new cd as much as any of their other stuff.
The first reason is how Amy sings. I remember hearing the preview to Sweet Sacrifice, and I thought it was pretty good until the chorus. The way Amy goes from one note to another gradually, like Cristina Agulera or someone would do, completely ruins the mood. It gives the whole mood a less serious feel, like Amy is just joking around with her music.
But the main reason why this TOD is not as good is Fallen is the instruments. In an interview, Amy said she was excited because she was able to put a lot more stuff into the songs, so listeners could hear something different every time. That is true, but by doing this, it makes everything blend together. The piano is almost non-existent because of the continuous techno sounds and drum beats blocking it out. The piano was one of Evanescence's distinguishing features, and without it they become like any other band. A good example is the song Like You. This is a very good song, and the intstument placement is very good. The guitar coming in when Amy sings "...hate me..." conveys a mood of anger to this sad song, which is perfect. But the entire mood is destroyed by the constant boops and bops in the background. Amy should have ued piano continuously, and added the guitar in. Another example is Your Star. The beginning is great, but the guitar coming in ruins the mood of solitude and sadness, and doesn't mix well. The continuous drum beats thruoughout the rest of the song make it even worse. The only song that the blend-ish-ness went good with was Snow White Queen, becasue the 1st and 2nd verse were sung so well. But the rest of the song is sung very different, like most of the songs on TOD, so it all blends and sounds like any other song. The reason Fallen's sound was so good is because the instruments played contrasting enough that it let you focus on the mood more. I could feel the sadness when I listened to Hello, and the anger when I listened to Going Under, because there were no distractions. It was all plain and simple, and strong at the same time. With TOD, everything blends because there is so much going on, and combined with Amy's bad singing and diction, the songs turned out bad.
I'm sorry if this seemed like a rant, but I needed to tell someone this. If Amy wants her music to be like this, that's fine. Just as long as she knows she lost a huge fan, who won't listen to very much music once she starts coming out with worse and worse music. Evanescence WAS my favorite band, and will always have songs that I relate to most love more than any other. But if they continue in the direction they're going in, I don't think I'll be able to follow.

Look, I won't argue. You're entitled to your own opinion. But I really feel like you're being WAY too hard on them!

If any of the band members read kablay's post, PLEASE don't let it bother you... You have so many faithful fans who still love your music, and I'm sure you've gained even more after the release of TOD! No matter what, I'll always love your music... it's progressing so well and it just keeps getting better and better! The Open Door is truly amazing - Your best album yet! :)

The part that bothered me the most is about what you said about Amy's vocals. I think her voice has improved greatly! She has a huge range on the album, for one thing, but she has also added a lot of beautiful operatic as well. Don't get me wrong, I like her vocals on Fallen, but her voice sounds so much better now! It's more mature and beautiful. Don't forget, Fallen came out in what 2002/2003?

I totally agree! Her voice is so much more mature and well-developed... and like you said, her range is amazing!

Amy has ALWAYS had an amazing voice, but there's just something about her vocals on TOD that is unbelievable!

You can really tell that Amy's matured as a vocalist as well as composer/musician since Fallen.

Actually, the incredible songs and performances on the album show how much the entire band has 'grown up' :)

kablay, i actually agree with you on some points. evanescence is still my favorite band, but i do feel that amy does showoff more vocally, than lyrically when compared to fallen. that is a definite trait of christina aguilera. it's different, but it works for me and it sounds nice. i felt the same way you did when i heard cmwys, but i was so in awe over new music, i didn't find flaws in it until later. their music, lyrically, may not sound like 'old' evanescence, but they have matured enough that it would be bizarre to expect the exact same thing. anyway, i agree about instrumentation, it seems like some of the effects are overdone, but i think each song has it's own vibe and it worked out. one more thing, isn't rocky amazing on EVERY song!

Excuse me, he's entitled to his own opinion. Since when are we as fans required to like every single piece of music that Evanescence puts out?

I don't agree with his views at all but he has every right to express them. You are being rude and abrasive, and it needs to stop. Now. Grow up and accept the fact that not everyone will be enraptured with TOD and that's just the way it is.

I'll admit myself that I wasn't crazy about the album originally. It's grown on me.

To kablay, I respectfully disagree with this comment.

Her vocal inflection gives the musical picture overall a little bit more of a soulful sound. Doesn't hurt the album at all. The feel is different, but the lyrics are still there.

And Christina Aguilera can sing her ass off. Period. I'm not a big fan of Christina, but if you're trying to compare Amy's voice on this album to Christina's, you're complementing Amy tenfold.

The album was a bit dissappoinment when i first listened to it and as i got to listen to it more, it kinda gave me a brief idea of maturity and depress. The songs are well laid out and i think the cover art work is definitelly a piece of work. You can hear the diffrence between John L.C and Ben M. This is another step for Evanescence. In the end i would rate it as **** out of ***** stars.

theres alot of thing you need to understand about amy lee and the cd, if you think about it about the way the cd sounds compare to the last one and how her feelings are compare to them, yeah the 1st sounds out going and different and this new one is kind of depressing. well on this second one she is going through alot right now and she shows it in her music, i am one of the biggest fan of amy lee but i look past the music and think about the song on what it could mean or what point is trying to get out to people type of thing in a scence of speaking.

Jessi, the only thing you need to consider important is that you liked the album ... it doesn't matter what anybody thinks --- whether they agree with you or not --- because after all this discussion, you will listen to what you want to listen to, they will listen to what they want to listen to, and everyone will go their own merry way.

As for defending Evanescence, there shouldn't be a need to do that. If you think the song/album is good, then good for you. If other people think otherwise, good for them. AND when all is said and done, none of this will really matter, because if Evanescence remains true to themselves, they will continue to make music THEY like, and will not be influenced by whether people (yes, including their biggest fans) like the songs or not.

I ADORE all albums and all songs from Evanescence. The open door is not an exception. I can't say which song is my favourite but I can say that I don't like Call me when you're sober that much. I think it's a little too commercial. And the best thing is, that I don't ever get tired of Evanescence songs no matter how many times I listen to them.

I love The Open Door but I much prefer Fallen. It's only a matter of taste after all but I think the sound of The Open Door can sound a little bit artificial sometimes. When you compare "Bring me to life" to "Call me when you're sober" you can clearly see the difference. What I don't like on The Open Door is the lack of "calmer" songs such as My Immortal. Well, there is Good Enough but it's just not the same. Do you know what I mean? It looks to me as they have tried to put as much guitar as possible in every song. Don't get me wrong, I love The Open Door, but sometimes it's just too much. I think the guitars on "All that I'm Living for" are not necessary, I think the acoustic version is much more beautifull in fact. What I really liked on the previous songs is the use of metaphores because then the songs were left to your own interpretation and all fans could therefore identify with them. I miss the "gothic aspect" in Evanescence's songs (such as "Farther Away", etc...).
Anyway, I still enjoy The Open Door but I won't listen as much to it as I've listened to Fallen.

I think the open door is far better than Fallen. Before the open door came out, I doubted whether a cd could ever be better than fallen. It was rare to find a cd where i liked every song. I listened to the open door a few times, and each time I was amazed by it. Also, each time i noticed different sounds in each of the songs that I didn't hear before. The album is well layered and even though i wasn't sure about the second 'star' in 'your star', i think it sounds right now. I played fallen after the open door and i never thought i'd say this but the album sort of sounded flat. It didn't have the depth of the open door.

I like The Open Door better when I don't compare it to their previous albums. Overall, however, I'm vaguely disappointed. Part of it is because the sound is quite different from Fallen, but mostly it's the lyrics. I love that this album is different. I love that it's not the same "someone, please, pull me from this mire of shattered illusions" theme. I love that Amy seems/sounds so much more confident. But what disappoints me is how (forgive me, rabid fans) screechy some of the songs are, the general lack of poetry, and all the negative things associated with the songs. The biggest disappointment, as I've said before, is the lyrics.

To be completely honest, I don't know all the words. But I do know that they lack the imagery and language that I loved in Fallen. Like lithium-dawn said, the metaphors are what made the songs easy to relate to. I find it very difficult to relate to TOD. And even though that's not necessarily what I need from Evanescence songs anymore, I miss it. To be completely honest, I find the lyrics of TOD dull - with the exception of Like You and the odd line or bridge here and there.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I just like a different style of poetry than I used to, or maybe I expected too much. Three years is a lot of build-up. I'm just glad it gave me the time to discover that there are other bands. ;)

Sakhmet Yes! That's exactly what I meant! What disappoints me is most of all the lyrics. They are nearly all talking about love and broken relationships. What deceives me is that the lyrics are too straightforward ("You never call me when you're sober you only want it cause it's over"). What I really liked about Evanescence in the past was that the lyrics were really poetic and mysterious ("Holding my last breath, safe inside myself") and were left to interpretation to the fans.
Some songs are still like that such as Like You and Lithium, but you still don't have to dig a lot to understand the meaning of these lyrics. What I miss as well is the very dark tragic-romantic lyrics ("My Immortal", "Even in Death"). Overall, I think this has erased some of what made Evanescence's music so originial.

Okay...well, what can i say about TOD!!

this album is amazing. the vocals are breathtaking. amy has grown SOOO much since Fallen! my frist time hearing CMWYS-the frist line she said- i knew right off the bat that her voice had changed COMPLETLEY..it was so confident and strong. i LOVE LOVE LOVE all the emotion on this album, i can hear her singing right from her heart, i can hear all the energy and passion. the high notes are flawless. and i was SOO surpized when i heard her hit the lowest not in Snow White Queen! this album shows her range- definatley, and showcases her wrting tlaents and creativeness, with the music.

the music is another thing- its so funny how sometimes i can't even notice the music in these songs since it belnds so well, its just part of the lyric in some way..its kiinda hard to explain- is like amy is singing the music as well as the lyrics! but i really like all the different types of music..its so good!

I really like this album. The way the sound has evolved since Fallen is fantastic, I love the heavier rock feel. I don't have a favourite track (I don't have one on Fallen either) because I can't choose between them. And, while Fallen was great for brooding (my favourite non-constructive passtime), a lot of The Open Door just makes me want to jump around like an idiot and play air guitar (provided nobody is watching). The band's sound has altered a bit since Fallen but they have kept that unique combination of vocals and instruments that drew me to the band in the first place, and in my opinion made it better. The music these guys is create is EXACTLY the type of music I love. Evanescence really are my favourite band and though a small number of others come close, Ev will always be at the top of the list. I had TOD in my CD player for a week after I first bought it, I just couldn't get enough of the music. (Wow, this is turning into one of those awful freaky-fan posts. Not good). In conclusion, The Open Door is a masterpiece.

Of course the lyrics weren't going to be similar to Fallen's. Fallen had Ben Moody and David Hodges as writers, TOD doesnt have them two as writers, they have a new writer in the band, Terry. so the lyrics had to had somewhat of a change.

Evanescence’s second studio album ‘The Open Door’ boldly breaks free of Fallen’s constraints and delves deeper into very dark, obscure corners. The innovative fusion of metal with classical resonates throughout this masterful record, particularly in the Mozart inspired ‘Lacrymosa’. The band’s inevitable maturity since Fallen is displayed via complex melodies and intricate guitar playing, both of which are abundant in ‘Your Star’ and ‘Lose Control’. Lee’s ethereal vocals fracture through the album’s gloomy density with intense expression. This is most prominent in the self-doubt filled ballad ‘Lithium’.

Evanescence’s new record will appeal to a more specific audience, separating the quality from the quantity. B+

The Whole Cd is completly different from all °old° cd before, except fallen. In my opinion, the songs sounds a bit like Fallen, but it's the same band, so it's normal. But, I think TOD is the logical continuation of Fallen. The same sujects...but in a different way. We can note a similarity between °Hello° and °Like you° for exemple. The Evanescence's °Lacrymosa° is awesome and give a great homage to Mozart. A+

Evanescence's Open Door was the 57th highest selling album of Billboard's year end chart which runs from December 2005 to November 2006.

In this calendar year, they're obviously much higher.

EDIT: Searching is rad!

Everyone had the Fallen record. Everyone thought that band was cool, or loved Amy's voice or ... Something. And most people knew they were a Christian band, are, or are Christians and new somehow they're still dark. And we all liked that. And everyone knew "My Immortal" and "Bring Me to Life".
Before I continue, I want to explain. Were these two songs #1 in the states? Not at all. Did they get a lot of airplay? Yes. But isnt two singles pretty little to sell as many copies as they did? Sure is, but you know what it goes down to? Impact. Singers like Nelly Furtado were #1 for six weeks and are now just barely going platinum while Evanescence never at the time had a #1 yet went 6x platinum. And that was because those two songs were brilliance.
Moving on there is drama and Ben leaves. I was very worried because I knew Ben was the main songwriter (I know everyone's going to say Amy co-wrote with him, and she did, but Ben has come up with A LOT of amazing stuff on that record regardless) and I wondered how they'd be without him. I always liked that they were commercial yet dark and great.
But I can't say Amy has continued that. This record is a record not for the masses. The great thing about Fallen was that basically any listener could enjoy it. This record sounds like an underground band who was given a great recording contract hoping to have some modest success. I'm not trying to be mean, but that's what it comes off as. Not as a band that just sold 14 million copies.

Honestly, I was anticipating this record in some ways. "Fallen" had some masterpieces on it obviously, and I was hoping I'd like the next effort as a more consistent record (a lot of the songs on "Fallen" sound really similar or boring) and have some gems obviously.
I was sorely dissapointed. Amy Lee bitches and moans about Ben Moody constantly in the media but it is very apparent she needs him back. I'm not saying the record doesn't have its moments such as "Weight of the World", "Like You", or "Lithium" or "Snow White Queen", but other than that what is really left? Mediocre rock songs and lyrics that are hard to relate to such as "Sweet Sacrifice" or "Your Star"
"Good Enough" was supposed to be some amazing power ballad and it is pretty boring. I don't care how meaningful or special a song is to some artist - If it isnt good, it just isnt. Cloud 9 and Lose Control must be experimental songs but to the masses no one is going to get into it. I find those two songs really hard to listen to.
"The only one" is a half decent rock song. The lead single is catchy.

Honestly, after you sell as many records as Evanescence did, you can't just decide to limit yourself to the underground community and do something totally not mainstream and honestly barely half good which is what this record is. There is no "My Immortal" or "Going Under" or "Tourniquet" or even "Whisper" on here. There is a bunch of guitars and pianos all in the wrong place lacking proper hooks or catchiness or mass appeal. And does Amy Lee smoke or something? Her voice sounds quite vulnerable and kind of weaker than last time around.
Like, it sounds as though she's trying a lot harder then she normally has to.

Like I said, I dont want drama. It's just I was expecting a great record - I dont feel I got it.

I love TOD, but i have to agree, that Fallen is much, much better. All of Fallen songs are unique and tell a different story. They are dark, and yet sad. I think Fallen is the best debut album of all time.

TOD, i love. its a new sound that has some great songs on it (IMO, Like You, Lose Control, Lachrymosa, Lithium, Sweet Sacrifice) but i found some of the songs way too repitive. Weight of the World, for example, is my least favorite song on the album. In the chorus Amy says 'i won't be held down by who i used to be.' Now in Lachrymosa, Amy says "i can't change who i am." In The Last Song I'm Wasting On You, she says 'I'll make my own way.' I find all these lines way too similar in meaning. I don't like Amy's writing as much as Moody's. Ben might be a very large penis, but he is a helluva good song writer. IMO, Understanding is the best written Evanescence song ever, and he wrote that one. Amy's songs just tend to be too repitive. I love love songs, but not all your songs have to be love/angst songs Amy! That's where we get Good Enough. its a 'happy' song, that still talks about waiting for the sadness 'i'm still waiting for the rain to fall.' I just don't like all the reused crap she is dealing.

I love TOD to death, and would kill for it, but it doesn't touch Fallen, IMO. Fallen had originality, and sorrow on its side.

Well, I would normally put this into "The Open Door Discussion" thread, but I can't find it.

Anywho, several people keep on saying that it took a couple of listens in order to love some songs on TOD. So, which ones did you listen on the first try and instantly loved?

For me: Call Me When You're Sober, Weight of the World, Lacrymosa, All that I'm Living For, Good Enough and The Last Song I'm Wasting on You. All of those I just had to listen to once before loving them! :p

After a second listen I stared liking: Lithium (yes it took me two listens before actually likeing it), Cloud Nine and Your Star

After a few more listens: Sweet Sacrafice, Like You, Snow White Queen and The Only One.

The only song I still haven't grown on is "Lose Control". But, I'm beginning to like it.

It may have took me a while, but now I love all the songs on TOD so much! I don't know about anyone else, but I like it better than Fallen. The lyrics may be less metaphorical, but in exchange we get a much more unique, mature, growing and personal album.

Sweet Sacrifice stood out the most for me.. It has been my favourite since the first time I listened to TOD, and Your Star took me maybe 5 weeks for me to actually start liking it. Then It finally grew on me. But now I pretty much have a new favourite every day.. I love TOD..:D

Hmmm. That's a tough call. I actually listened to the CD out of order lol. I think Cloud Nine, Your Star, and Sweet Sacrifice really stood out to me on first listen. Your Star quickly grew to be my favorite song on the album and it still is lol I'm such a nerd about that song.

WOTW didn't grow on me until I heard it live...I liked it, but the insane effects just bothered me like crazy. Then I heard it pwn everything live and I was like OKAY I LOVE THIS SONG NOW lol.

I have to say that one song that I started out really liking and ended up not liking as much is Like You. I can't even explain why; I just really don't like it as much anymore. Lose Control I didn't like from the beginning but it's slowly growing on me lol.

The rest of the songs I liked in varying degrees and my opinion on them has changed over the past couple of months. Now I like them all, with the partial exception of LC and LY. So TOD did take a bit to grow on me, too; probably because it's just so different than the old stuff. I had to adjust lol. And now I consider myself very well-adjusted indeed ;)

It's a great album. The greatest I know actually. Better than Fallen. Origin too, but Origin isn't an album.

(a bit off topic but)
What I find weird is when I ripped all the songs from the CD to the computer, the folder picture for it was the cover for Everybody's Fool single. And that's weird because when I play it on Windows Media Player the little box on the right shows The Open Door cover. :/

But anyways, I love The Open Door :> I play it on my boombox alot, my brother likes Call Me When You're Sober and Lithium. <-(before lithium became a single. *coincedence*).. *reallylamerightnow*

Really? In windows it showed no cover for "The Open Door" and called all the songs "Untitled Song by Unknown Artist". So I had to fill it in on iTunes.

But we all love it

Amy's songs just tend to be too repitive. I love love songs, but not all your songs have to be love/angst songs Amy! That's where we get Good Enough. its a 'happy' song, that still talks about waiting for the sadness 'i'm still waiting for the rain to fall.' I just don't like all the reused crap she is dealing.

In The Open Door, the following words have been used this many times (yes, including repeated words/choruses):

Love: 24
Feel: 19
Alone: 16
Lost: 10
Real: 10
Sweet: 10
Dream: 9
Dark: 8
Grieving: 8
Cold: 7
Eyes: 6
Scream: 5
Bleed: 4
Sacrifice: 4
Heart: 2

When I have essays to write, I do strange things like this. Here's to hoping that future Evanescence songs explore other emotions... or at least employ a thesaurus.

Wow. o_o That really let me down lol. As a lyricist, I always value Amy's lyrics...but, y'know, just look for repitition in OTHER musicians lyrics...especially the radios lyrics. >>; But, if you're looking for flaws you're gonna be disappointed...Amy will keep getting better, the lyrics are constantly developing, so I'm not too worried.

Look at it this way. How many words total in TOD?

Wickedlady
01-15-2007, 10:06 PM
My favs on TOD... Like you, All that I am living for, Sweet Sacrifice , Lacrymosa, Snow white queen and Lose control. But I like the whole album. In fact to be honest I loved TOD the minute I heard it, though I will admit that there were a few songs that I love now that I didn't like at all, such as, Snow White Queen, All I am living for and just today I discovered that I actually do reallly love Lituium. I just find that the more i listen to this album the more I love it. I mean these songs just sort of grow on you, even the ones that you don't care for that much, like your star for example are still good songs.

Basically this album is just amazing not only because it has the ability to make you like songs you didnt' orginally but It also has made me take a second look at fallen. Now I have found songs on that album I never ever liked that i love now, Imaginary, haunted, and Tourniquet. So not only do I love TOD even more but I also love Fallen even more.

And as for the repeative of certain words on this album, the funny thing is I never noticed that until it was pointed out, and well for some reason it made me like it even more, like maybe everything is more tied together, the songs seem to blend better now. I don't know maybe i am just weird.

Okay I have a really dumb question I keep hearing people talk about the song The Last Song I'm Wasting on You, and refering to it being on the open door. But I am looking at my cd case right now, and that song is not on it. So what gives? Is it a hidden song somewhere? I also have heard about a song called dreaming that supposivly be on this cd that isn't. I am just wondering if I got a defective copy or is it because I live in Canada?

Also someone a few pages ago mentioned how TOD doesn't have an immortal type song, well call me crazy, and I hope I don't offend anyone but to me Like you is just as good as my immortal if not better, and well has a similar type of feel to it. So yes I guess the point I am trying to make is that Amy is one amazing song writer! But on another note I do agree with that person's point that Good enough (although I still love it) is kind of slow, I just wished it was a bit harder.

The Last Song I'm Wasting on You is a B-side, its not on TOD. I think it was a bonus track on the iTunes download of TOD, and I think it's also on the Lithium single. As for a song called "dreaming", I've never heard anything about that. But it's definitely not on the album.

Well, anyway, I LOVE the album it's so great. My favorite songs are lithium because it kind of reminds me of me, i'm in love with being depressed almost all the tinme but i want to change and i also love Lacrymosa it's so dark and pretty. I wonder if they'll ever come to Panama....:(

True, but if you look at "Fallen" (and I have done this, I just didn't keep the tally sheet) there are a *hell* of a lot of repetitive words. Repetitive words usually represent the general themes of any album.

Another thing is that Evanescence seems to love the "tears/fears" couplet. Look for it; you'll find it *everywhere*!

Personally, I don't mind these repetitions; I actually really like them. They always find something new to do with the words they choose in each song, and if you look closely at any form of poetry, repetition can give you insight into the writer and usually put there for emphasis on a certain idea that an artist may want the reader to take away from their work (I'm sorry for this rambling, this is what happens when you're an English major)!

I definitely think this album is one of those albums where the more you listen to it, the more the songs grow on you. Every song is definitely unique ;) Overall, I would say this album rocks! Its very different from "Fallen", but I love them both. These two albums are like different sides of Evanescence.

I'll post that post here too. Why not, since apparantly this is where it's supposed to go anyway:

I was listening to the new album again on the way home from work (and after seeing Evanescence live yesterday) and I was struck by how good some of the songs are. And I mean, the later songs in the cd. If it were me I would have cut out the first 3 songs of the cd, thrown in "The Last Song I'm Wasting On You", and changed up the order a bit. The remaining songs are far more inventive and don't all sound similar if you play them in the right order. Here was the order I tried:

1. All that I'm Living For (which is actually a good choice for a single, I now have to admit)
2. The Only One (too slow for a single, but amazingly catchy and good build-up towards the end)
3. Cloud Nine (this one should be a single!!! so catchy)
4. Lacrymosa (another good one, sounds very good live too)
5. Lithium (good choice for single, though it may take awhile to build up on radio I think, and it could potentially bomb as it's kind of 'different' ... a hard rock ballad .. hehe)
6. Your Star (this song soundS AWESOME live as part of the encore!!)
7. Lose Control (I just love the guitars on this song!!)
8. The Last Song I'm Wasting On You (a very pretty song, they should make this one a single even though it's not actually on the album)
9. Like You (pretty song, nice rock build-up at the end)
10. Snow White Queen (interesting song, it grows on you)
11. Good Enough (pretty, but boring)

And as B-sides to singles they could include Sweet Sacrfice, Weight of the World and Call Me When you're sober. These are rather generic, radio-friendly songs that the album could do without IMO. As I hear the other songs they're much more creative and interesting than these ones. Which is funny, cuz they're the ones I liked most at first!
Anyway, let me know what you think and also the order you'd choose. Also you could include singles you'd go with. Here's my single choices:

1. Lacrymosa (establish the album as having epic songs)
2. The Last Song I'm Wasting On You (the true ballad of the album, the 'My Immortal')
3. All that I'm Living For
4. Cloud Nine
5. Lithium
6. Your Star

smatter them with singles hehe ...

So what do you think/hope will be the next single after ATILF anyway? Was Lithium a good choice of singles?

A few things to talk about :P

PS -- The reason I add all this in ONE THREAD rather than separate ones is to keep the discussion easier to follow through on. Discussing all the songs separately seems to be rather time-consuming to me

Don't think I have posted anything about TOD in the past.

I was looking forward to its release since about Jan 2006, and when it finally came out, bought the album on the day it was released (thankfully ASDA/Wal*Mart had it in on Oct 2nd :D).

I listened to the album in the order that the tracks are on the CD. I instantly liked Sweet Sacrifice, had heard CMWYS, so I liked that too, Lacrymosa was awesome, but I really couldn't get into the rest of the album. I was sooo disappointed, especially after reading reviews like the one in Kerrang! where they said it wiped the floor with Fallen.

However, Ev are my favourite band, so I wasn't going to write off The Open Door that easily! :D

I listened to the album all the way though a few times, and soon knew the words to a lot of the songs. I started liking Weight Of The World, Cloud Nine, Snow White Queen, Lose Control and The Only One. After a few more listens, I really started to like the remaining songs; ironically, the songs I didn't like at first are now my favourites on the album (especially Your Star and All That I'm Living For(which is just amazing)).

Now, I am so pleased I persevered! All the songs on TOD are brilliant, I definitely like it as much as, if not a little more than, Fallen.

I think the reason I didn't like it at first is that it is much heavier than I was expecting. But that's good - Origin (my favourite album) is a bit softer (IMO), Fallen is heaver, and The Open Door is the heaviest. They're all unique and amazing, variety is good!

Now, I can't wait to hear the new songs live :D hopefully it will happen this year.

If anyone has TOD and isn't hooked straight away, give it a lot of listens - you might find you love it!

2. Lose Control
3. Lacrymosa
4. Your Star

It's funny; when I initially listed all the songs in order of my favorites, I don't think "Your Star" was that high on the list. Now I love it like whoa.

It was so hard at first to choose favorites, but now it isn't that difficult. I think it's because these are the songs that, in the end, really have an affect on me. I get chills every time. Well, with the exception of "Lose Control". That one has to remain at the top just because of its supreme awesome-ness. :D

I used to think Evanescence was bringing rock back until TOD came out. I love it, but, as compared to Fallen (lyrically/eccentricity/sound) it is a disappointment. They aren't bringing rock back now. I just don't see it.

I hope SS is a big hit, because Lithium isn't cutting it for me anymore. I see SS as a bigger hit anyway. But i don't see why Ev is only releasing the songs about relationships--that sucks out loud. CMWYS is obviously about a relationship, Lithium hints at one, and SS is about a relationship. I'm so tired of this repetitive, mediocre Evanescence. It's kinda sad, since most of their songs were unique, whether about relationships or death. I can't blame people for disliking Evanescence, as they have shifted into a chick band now.

Random, but the true.

I absolutely love The Open Door! It is one of my favorite records that I own. I can listen to it again and again, and it never gets old. Ev's music has always been deep and powerful, and, to me, it seems to be even more so on TOD. I didn't think too much of it at first, but it grew on me, too, and I am completely in love with every single song on it. It's so meaningful, deep, and powerful. Very moving, as well. I got it for my birthday back in October. LOL Best gift I received. I love it so much. What I wouldn't do to hear them perform songs from it live! That'd be incredible. But yeah, I love it--it's SUCH a beautiful record. I love all the songs, but my top five favorites are:
1)Lithium
2)Lose Control
3)Weight of the World
4)Lacrymosa
5)Sweet Sacrifice

well that's because that's the basic foundation of what they (amy) write about...relationships. there's no mystery to that obviously. that's how see it.

Amy writes pretty eloquently, but it's so repetitive. I can't stand it some times, i wish she would sing of other things. I love love songs, and anti-love songs. TOD has both, but they get so cliche that it's unflattering to the bands great talent.

If one listens to the songs pre-Fallen, most are about relationships as well, but they aren't repetitive. They all have their own flavor, and stand out.

How much of a difference is there between SS and CMWYS? Very little.

Mine would be, roughly...

(#1 and #2 are a toss-up. I have more CMWYS plays on iTunes than Lithium so I'm going w/that...)

1. CMWYS
2. Lithium
3. Lacrymosa
4. Sweet Sacrifice
5. ATILF, even though it has less plays than The Only One (wiwwle green bean... (http://wiwwle.ytmnd.com/)). idk how that works.

p.s. I tend to giggle when listening to TOO b/c of that link.
