Does anyone know what is being said in the whispering bits at the beginning? I think it's more audible in the remix of Missing (are the whispering bits the same?).

Yes. There are only two versions. The one with the beeps is just something that happened during the process of uploading it onto the P2P program and it picked up "Landmines" which are destroyers of song and virus carriers.

I think the phrases mean, or can mean, something like "Can you stop the fire of rage or hate or the fire in someone's heart." "Can you stand to fihgt her/his demons or why he/she left." "You can't stop the fire of rage, hate, or in someones heart only they can." "You won't say the words that mean something important to someone, or the 3 simple ones. I love you."

The "Hah ha haaa hah" throught out the verses can be something like a calming breathing or if someone who is mad, or taking their last breath, or they can't stand what they're going through anymore.

The "Please, please, please..." throught out the verses can be a pleading of saying "I love you." To them or just a "Please let me go." Or a "Please forgive me."

I think the song is about Jesus Christ, and the fact that even though he died on the cross, most of us are nearly completely ungrateful for it, and that there could be consequences for that. The song is told through the eyes of Christ:

Oh, "Missing" is breathtaking! I like the demo better than the AbH version, just because it's a bit slower and it sounds like there's more emotion in it. Plus, the way Amy vocalizes in the background is fantastic. I like how she sings "Please" after the first chorus because it sounds more emotional. And, for some reason, I just love it when she exhales like she's out of breath at the end.

What I get out of them is:

"Can you stop the fire? Can you stand to fight her?" Is that the person is wondering if they can stop the fire of their loneliness and if happiness can over come it. OR The person whom Amy is speaking of, if they can stop the fire of loneliness or rejection wondering if they're willing to fight it.

"You can't top the fire You won't say the words." Meaning that the person, or the person being spoken to, won't stop the fire if the loneliness because they won't say the words that are needed to be said.

The repeating of the "Hah ah haa" most likely symbolizes being soothed or calm.

The repeating "Please... please... please" most likely symbolizes the begging of the person to stop the fire, and wanting them to say the words.

I remember when ABH came out, Kerrang said this song was 'classic ev' or something - I have no idea why, though - it's NOTHING like any of the other songs on Fallen (probably the reason for its exclusion). It's probably one of my favourites, but because it's on the end of ABH, I hardly ever listen to it (if I want ot listen to Ev I generally put Origin, Fallen or The Open Door on). Thank God for iTunes or I'd never listen to it at all. :)

The bonus track on "Fallen" was "My Immortal (Band Version)." And on the Japanese version it was "Farther Away."

The final edit of "Missing" was on the 4 track Maxi-single of "Bring Me To Life" and track 14 on "Anywhere But Home."

I prefer the whispers at the beginning of the song in the demo version opposed to the other versons, but otherwise I like the Fallen B-side version best.

When they perform it live, it sounds like the song is mostly based on the B-side version, but it sounds like it uses the guitar part from the demo version.

No. It's more of a form of an organ, because it has different size pipes, height and width wise, and it has sort of a muffled bell-ish tone to it. And you have to hit a metal plate with a padded hammer/mallet (kind of like the things used for Timpani drums) thing to make the sound in the pipes.

We have two in band. Maybe three.

This is an excellent song. It should have DEFINITELY been on Fallen and I truly wonder why it wasn't included. It would have fit in perfectly between "Hello" and "My Last Breath." The song fits the theme of the album so well and it's easy to relate to. Everyone feels "missing" at some point in their life. The lyrics are just so beautiful and sad.

The live version of this song is excellent too. The way that they replaced the strings with acoustic guitar and piano was stunning. :D

I love both the versions, for different reasons. On the demo version, the channeling is more distinct, and the breathing at the beginning and end is cool. Plus, Amy's voice almost sounds smoother on the demo version when she sings "Even though I'm the sacrifice..." It's heavenly :D. But I love the ABH version too--there's really cool harmonies, and the added verses are awesome.

No, in the demo version there is one loud inhale/breath at the very start, then the breathing sounds. The ABH version only has the breathing sounds.

Missing is the song that really started everything with Evanescence for me.
Of course I'd heard Bring me to Life and My Immortal before, burt I was surfing youtube, and I found this song, and I searched everywhere for who the artist was, and I immediately bought it on iTunes. It quickly earned over 200 listens. :p

Darn, I used to have it, but it was lost when my computer crashed several months ago. Amy-fan.org used to have it up in the news section, but they don't have it up anymore. It was very low quality, as I remember, because it was recorded off the radio in mono on Audacity.

It took a good many years but... I think this song has finally 'got' me. I have always underestimated this song and couldn't understand why everyone loved it so much.

But after listening to it live on Nissan Yahoo sets... I have fallen in love and I finally understand it. The way Amy sings it is so beautiful. People always comment on how her voice is messed up and strained when she sang it then, but for some reason the aberrations in her voice just made it better for me, like someone was really 'pleading' and 'upset'. It was extremely powerful, and I must say, 'Missing' has finally taken over me.

Well I have heard the demo version, remix and Live on Nissan sets, I can tell you that if you haven't heard it yet at yahoo Live on Nissan sets, that song rocks the tempo is right on target, vocal are solid as usual, the acoustic twaing was really hooking it up.
The base was a quite thundering ROAR!

If I had to chooser from those three I heard hands down the mix used on the Nissan set was by far the best I have heard that song to date.

That's interesting on the lyrics question. I always thought it was "And if I breathe..I'll bleed.." I haven't read anywhere about the lyrics, it's just what I heard. But at least we all know "bleed" is in there.:)

I was so excited to see this on "ABH." Just when I thought it coudn't have gotten better..a new song!

I love the intro and close to this song, the whispering fits the overall atmosphere of it. I just adored it at first listen, and have since called it an Ev favorite.
The lyrics have such a somber lonliness, and the feeling like ALMOST being "there", yet still lost..unnoticed. And almost like the ignored exsistence could partially be self-imposed in the sense of helplessness, and being alone actually the way she feels she should feel. "Please, please forgive me..but I won't be home again." "I know what you do to yourself..I breathe deep and cry out." But the beautiful darkness of the song is the hopeless feeling of being alone. "I'll bleed..knowing you don't care..and if I sleep just to dream of you..I'll wake without you there..isn't something missing..isn't someone missing me?" One could almost say she misses herself as well.
It is the pain of a confining lonliness..love that goes ignored. "Bleed" is mentioned here symbolic of pain and sacrifice.
